You are what you wear

“You are what you wear”, the wise words ring true when walking the streets and being presented with the wide range of ill matched clothing choices made by the youth of Colombo.
No matter what the occasion nor how convincing the individual, it’s slightly more beyond the glaring checks of an out of season crew shirt in the middle of summer. Nowhere else will you find a wider collection of outdated apparel than on the streets of Colombo where all fashion guidelines are adhered to as much as the street laws are adhered to.

Bringing a nation out of the unfashionable slumber is a task for another article but for the simple purpose of this one, a few pointers for the early 20’s in terms of their clothing choices.

20’s are naturally a confusing age to dress for considering that the teenage sub cult black t-shirts with the bland rock band slogans and the beige three quarters worn throughout school are fast approaching their date of expiry. But with a little tweaking the transition can be made simple and fun for the aspiring fashionista.

Big Logos

Out with the big sports brands announcing to the world what team you support except of course if you’re attending a sports event. Get used to the more subtle tones of a button down shirt or a polo shirt.

Plain tees are always in and don’t look like they’ll go out of style, a very impressive addition to this season’s collection are the abstract design tees for casual wear specially with a V cut when possible. Thin is in again and figure hugging shirts and bulging muscles are giving way to a sleeker look and a slimmer cut. White is the highlight of this season’s shades alongside pale shades of green and yellow.

Basics

Tailored slim cuts are in for formal wear as well as for casual day to day use. Invest in a fitted blazer for the fancier occasions and a numbered pair of jeans.

Dress shirts aren’t going out this season with the increased popularity of extra slim cut shirts. The name of the game is best fit; nothing that isn’t the perfect cut will make the mark.

Interviews

Interviews are a major point of concern in the 20’s and are often over done or under done, neither of which helps the cause. Depending on the context the attire will vary from a blazer and dress pants to shirt and dress pants, but few pointers remain unchanged.

Fit is of utmost importance, badly fitting clothing will come across as shabby and negligent. Bright coloured ties are an age old trick to maintain attention to the core of the individual.

Turquoise is a popular colour for a tie keeping with the adage “you can trust a man in blue” A sleek leather belt and a good watch will help drive the point home coupled with a well maintained pair of formal dress shoes.

Casual Weekends

Trade in your boot flare jeans for a simple straight cut this season and your branded tees for solid colours. If the brand you’re wearing is up with the times the label will be barely noticeable anyway.

Sneakers are fast running out of style (no pun intended) instead work on a pair of Oxford’s or a Boat shoe, the only casual shoes that aren’t shunned by designers this season.

As far as keeping with times go it’s only as important as how you feel. But surely you’ll feel a lot better in the best fits of this season than the rejects from last year. So invest in a few items of clothing that will last you the season and start making the impression you wanted to make.
