Worshipping Immortality

It is not the fifties where we have a life size poster of Marylyn Monroe or James Dean pasted on our wall and we gush about it until our respective guardians give us in marriage to that not so curvaceous or manly person.

Living in a time where there’ s internet and Facebook and possibly better looking prospects within our reach than an over paid actor or an anorexic model we still lush over the immortals.

So why is it that we luurrrrvvee celebrities???

“Well okay. Cause celebrities always come off as those perfect people. Who everyone wants to be, or be with,” says 22 year old Vidya who drools over American idol star Adam Lambert despite his sexual orientation.

So IT IS an oestrogen thing. I do understand that. Thanks to the tales such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella we are deceived in to believing that there is THAT perfect man for you. And most importantly the - happily.ever.after.

However I admit that fame and fortune is pretty impressive. I mean did you know that Reese Witherspoon charges a whopping 20 million U.S D’$ per film???

Agreeing with my suspicions is Raika, a 21 year old student and teacher who has a long standing crush on singer with a questionable celebrity status. “It’s not the celebrities themselves I think. It is their fame and fortune and of course their looks. Fortune and looks - two things a girl would want in a guy along with brains of course.”

So is that why you like Kris Allen? “Kris Allen’s a different story. I was just talking about normal celeb crushes. Kris Allen has everything and he seems so down to earth for a celebrities,” she sighs dreamily. “And also he is my soul mate.”

In the era of black and white movies the status of “celebrity” was limited to the participants of these films and maybe singers.

But today nearly everyone, even a “somebody’s anybody” becomes a celebrity. We have the Kim Kardashian - reality star, Adriana Lima - Model, Lewis Hamilton - race car driver and even the ex U.S President Bill Clinton came in to celebrity “stud” status.

“I also strongly believe that we are obsessed with celebrities because we need to run away from the day to day boredom. It may sound bizarre. But think about it, when you have a bad day, a good episode with Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother could cheer you up. Or staring at her poster and thinking about how good she looks could really wake you up. If you are not sorted out in your head and don’t feel too good about yourself, I’m sure you are more inclined to follow the celebrity you crave for and be happy day dreaming about what it would be like to have her around,” admits 26 year old Sunesh who works in media.

Personally I don’t understand the “Robin” thing but obviously he speaks for MANY MANY boys out there.

“Robin from How I Met Your Mother? She is HHHHHHHHOOOTTTT! Smoking baby!” says Jeromy 26. “BUT if it makes you feel any better, I would choose Jessica Biel and Kim Kardashian over Robin any day.”

So have we carved out the ideal man/woman for us by our indirect contact with these icons or have these icons given us the perfect image of an ideal man/ woman?

“Sweetness, I drool over Jack Black. Everyone has a weird sense of attraction,” explains Keshiya, 22

Ok. Got it. It’s perfectly fine to dream and create fictional characteristics of charm about that household name that we never have or never will meet.

It’s so perfectly fine that marital therapist Andrew G. Marshall, author of I Love You But I’m Not In Love With You, claims that it’s healthy to do so even if you’re married. “Everybody fantasises,” he says. “And only a small percentage of those people fantasise about their partner. A quarter of the population regularly admit to at least one celebrity crush.”

All right then. Since there aren’t any obvious objections... Darling Al Pacino, I take you to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part....Sighhh.
