Meet Vindya Cooray

You would describe Vindya as a young, talented, qualified individual but when I asked how she'd describe herself in one word, she simply said "I am versatile".

The time she allocated for an interview with me is a clear portrayal that she does try at all times to live up to the description of herself.

Here's a detailed overview of our time with Vindya Cooray who is currently the Finance Manager of Walkers Tours, JKG and a graduate in line for her Master's from the University of Colombo.

1. You ranked first at the ICASL exam. How did you manage to achieve that?
Hard work and commitment I suppose. I was unaware of the prize I had won until my friends told me about it. I did not put extra effort or pressure to be honest, but I was determined to do my best, which ultimately made me the best!

2. What inspired you to take the up your current field?
When I was in school, I was considered to be an all-rounder and I aced almost all of my subjects. I was also appointed to be the head girl during my prefect years.  However with time, I developed a special liking towards business studies and business management over science and other social sciences which paved the way to my achievements and career.

3. A presentation of yours got people thinking. Care to elaborate?
It was the “International Conference for CA Students’ organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to which I was selected from chartered accounting students to represent Sri Lanka.  I titled my presentation "Walk the Talk" which highlighted the concept actions speak louder than words. I received tremendous feedback from the audience which made me confident and a figure certain participants confided in.

4. How has your education paved the way in getting to where you are today?
My alma-mater St. Lawrence’s Convent where I learnt my ABCs is an unforgettable stepping stone to my achievements and career development. However when I was an undergraduate at the University of Colombo, I was involved in the student society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, was lecturing, teaching as well as studying at the same time which proved to be a great learning curve, giving me life lessons on time management, and adaptability which helped me come a long way in order to balance my life and to be flexible.

5. Apart from finance and accountancy, do you have any other interests you'd like to explore?
I am personally passionate about giving back to the development of my profession. I’m actively involved in the Young Chartered Accountants Forum in which I hold the position of Vice President and I enjoy being involved in CSR projects even at work apart from fulfilling responsibilities and tasks assigned. I also enjoy singing, as I am more outspoken than shy and I believe it is a great stress reliever and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Travelling is another passion of mine and I enjoy the adventures each place has to offer and how it unfolds with every visit.

6.  What does the future hold for Vindya?
My personal life is pretty much fulfilled as I have settled down and my husband is extremely supportive, so is my family and extended family. I am very happy where I am today with regard to my career and it is indeed a fine balance between these two prospects which makes one a successful individual. I solely believe that you are the creator of your own destiny and you are responsible of how life turns out for you.

7. What would you consider as the stepping stone to your success?
Joining John Keells Group was indeed a milestone in my life which helped me build so many contacts, meet new people blessing me with the best superiors, the type I could look up to. The exposure I received is immense! Chartered Accountancy also has been a turning point in my life which directed me to get what I deserve as qualifications are of utmost importance in today's world.

8.  Are you pleased with the opportunities that have been offered to those of your calibre?
There are plenty of opportunities to those who seek, but the mindset of most is that you get to start right from the top once you have obtained the necessary qualifications. This is not the case as you must step out of your comfort zone and take up challenges. Challenges are opportunities in disguise which will lift you higher or either give you experience.

9. What do you enjoy most in your career?
Dealing with people is the best part as I get to meet people of all walks of life. Diverse cultures, traditions and people approaching you leave something behind for you to gather. When considering Sri Lanka, this particular time shows an awakening in the tourism industry. It is dynamic, exciting and undoubtedly never a dull moment.

10. Most memorable moment, if you have to pick one?
The International Conference for CA Students was remarkably unforgettable. Why, because it was huge and I was given the opportunity to represent my country. I was naturally nervous but I do remember how I was thinking of a catchy opening statement even on the flight and I came across one which managed to grip the audience. The undivided attention I received was a sign of success and after the conference I received positive feedback about how I conducted myself and how iconic I was being. It was touching and I treasured the moment I felt like a celebrity, a person an audience admired. I was an inspiration! It was definitely one of the most memorable moments I've experienced.
