The Style Files : The Skirt Revival
Fashions new ‘it’ item - the skirt revival
As we head into the cocktail/party season which means Christmas parties, catch-ups with friends and lots of festive gatherings it can become difficult trying to figure out what to wear to each occasion, not to mention the fact it can get expensive trying to have a new outfit for every event. This season, a dress - however fabulous, glamourous and sparkly it might have - is the beta choice for event dressing. Fashionable partygoers will, instead, be sporting the uuber cool party skirt.
Don’t get me wrong dresses are still great, stylish and have their place. But as we approach the end of the year party season, the party skirt is arguably the cooler choice. Because you can wear something else up top, it allows your statement to be understated - the sartorial equivalent of a nice glass of champagne at the start of the evening, rather than a tequila. It speaks of someone who never tries too hard and because you wear it with something plain (a white shirt or simple grey T-shirt) it has carte blanche. It can, actually, it should be as sparkly, sequined and fun as possible.
Raf Simons did tones of this for Dior although, this trend isn’t really from the catwalk, it does have roots in the front row power player outfit: a crisp plain shirt with a full, midi-length skirt in a bright colour or big print. (In a way, the international fashion front row has the same “in the know” codes as cool party dressing - dressed up but never ever OTT). Think Miuccia Prada, Anna Wintour, Olivia Palermo and Yasmin Sewell who wear it often and effortlessly, so if you want style inspiration, they’re the ones to follow.
As the diary fills up in December, it’s a welcome life hack as it’s the kind of thing that you can probably get away with at work - add different shoes and you’ll look ready for a night out.
You might have a party skirt hiding in your wardrobe but if you don’t it’s the perfect reason to hit the shops. Think metallic lamé, fringed skirts anything sequined or brocade. Add a plain T-shirt or self coloured shirt, and your effortless after dark look is here.
