Yes, grown women can and should wear pink. It’s no longer the reserve of wannabe Barbie dolls and bridesmaids. This girlish colour translates well in to the adult wardrobe.
Remember the scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Meryl Streep explains the life cycle of cerulean blue and how it filters down into your wardrobe? Well, pink in all its glorious shades is having an “it” moment after seasons of seeing it slowly emerge on the catwalks. The high priestess of fashion (also known as Anna Wintour), fashion bloggers (the new style-makers), stylists, celebrities and fashionistas are all wearing, writing and Instagramming about pink in some form.
From the softest blush to bolder cerise hues, take a walk on the prettier side of fashion this season. That said, pink doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go all out girlie, you can toughen it up and make it ironic with a touch of PVC, as Radhika Mendis did in her most recent collection. Pick a hue and go head to toe with it or just add a hint of pink through your accessories with a gorgeous scarf from PR - Paradise Road.
Blush pink is the perfect feminine neutral to add to your wardrobe and no longer confined to the lingerie drawer, this shade has made amazing inroads into mainstream clothing. Its fashion status elevated by Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz and Camila Alvez all wearing the hue to the Oscars. Kim Kardashian was recently spotted sporting the colour in a head to toe look from the Kardashian collection, moving the colour firmly into the mainstream fashion consciousness.
Elsa Schiaparelli introduced hot pink into women’s wardrobes and it’s a colour that can add instant cool to any outfit. Do remember though that clean lines and fuss free are key with this tone. Embellishment on fuchsia can sometimes come off as overdone but on petal pink shades, embellishments like sequins, beading and feathers work beautifully.
There’s a coolness, quirkiness and sophistication about pink that other colours just don’t have but if you’re a skeptic or you don’t want to commit to the colour, adding pink into your wardrobe through accessories will give it an instant shot of fashion forwardness. A pink bag or shoes or even bright pink nail varnish will give you serious fashion kudos as well as Arugam Bay’s pink and white ombre shirts.
With the myriad of shades out there pick the ones that work best for your skin tone. Don’t do ruffles or bows or anything too girlie, if it works for a three year old it won’t work for you! Don’t go overboard with it by matching your makeup to your outfit.
Fashion icons have always loved pink. Who can forget Marilyn Monroe in Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend, Jackie Kennedy in her pink Chanel suit, Carrie Bradshaw’s poetic pink Oscar de la Renta dress in the final season of Sex And The City. When Audrey Hepburn said “Ladies, I believe in pink” she was definitely on to something.
