The Style Files: The Magic of the Midi

As we head into the new year, one I hope will be wonderful for all of you, I thought I’d write a piece about an enduring item of fashion that we will continue to see a lot of in 2015.

A favourite of the seventies style set, sophisticates and ladylike types the midi skirt has never really been out of fashion's favour. Most diligent and stylish women have one or two in their wardrobe. Mine are hung between my favourite trousers (of which I have three identical pairs) and in my staple colours, black, grey and white. I have given into the midi which no matter how you look at it is alluring, feminine and saucy in a modest sort of way.

Olivia Palermo

Like a perfectly pitched canopy, its proportions give women the gift of a waist and it tends to cover the areas we might not love so much, like the knees, thighs and back of the thighs! The hemline on a midi skirt can fall anywhere from just below the knee to three inches above the ankle. It can be retro, tailored and structured or somewhere in between with the only rule being the longer your leg the lower the hemline can be.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Dial down the Mad Men factor by never wearing a rigid A-line midi with kitten heels, a box bag or a neck scarf. They are all potential parodic threats to modernity and should be avoided at all costs! If you prefer the longer version that floats closer to the ankle pair with a boxy crop top and a chunky heel. If you’re a sucker for simplicity wear yours with a crisp white shirt and pointy toed flats.

Sienna Miller

Prim or perverse, midi skirts have that “above fashion” appeal. They are not trend led, here today gone to the depths of the cupboard never to be seen again item. So why not commit forever? It’s an easy decision, nothing “midi” about it.
