The Style Files : The denim skirt, it’s back....
Relegated to the very depths of the closet in the early 2000’s the denim skirt has inched its way forward and is very firmly back in the spotlight. Whether it’s faded, frayed or crisp and dark, it’s time to dust off that denim skirt. The repurposing of this timeless fabric, the denim midi, skirt should be a key ingredient in your wardrobe.
Designers have upgraded and created their own spin of the denim midi skirt by mixing up the silhouettes, distressing and combining it with unexpected fabrics like leather and silk, making it ultimately fashion forward in their final design. One of my favourite parts about this new wardrobe staple is it’s uncanny ability to be worn both casually and dressed up. Swap a few pieces, and it’ll go from casual lunch attire to dinner party-ready.
If you’re feeling bold do the (often ridiculed as a fashion faux pas, but incredible on trend now) double denim pairing like Olivia, Kim and Rihanna, who are seasoned denim-on-denim devotees and can experiment with all manner of hues.
If you're new to the trend, seek out similar, or almost matching, shades of blue to make the look more cohesive and best of all, wearing the same colour head-to-toe elongates the frame.
When doing the double denim look, accessories like nude shoes or an of-the-moment tote will keep the ensemble current. Inject some colour through your make-up with a pink lipstick which will refresh your complexion and add depth to the tonal look. Keep the rest of your face relatively bare as the fresh-faced look suits the relaxed look.
The of the moment denim skirt is mid length but going longer or shorter can still hit the right fashion notes like most things depending on how you accessorise.
