Taylor Swift took the top prize at the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards Sunday Night, winning Entertainer of the Year, as the country music industry honoured its best.

"I'm so happy about this," Swift said after winning the award. "I want to say to my fellow nominees in this category I respect you so much and I love you."

Miranda Lambert and trio Lady Antebellum were among the early winners at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Lambert, the big winner at last year's awards with four trophies, won album of the year for "Four the Record." Lambert, who won album of the year twice before, called her albums her "babies."

"That's why I wake up in the morning," she said.

Lady Antebellum, coming off their smash hit "Need You Now," was named vocal group of the year, and the Eli Young Band took song of the year honors with "Crazy Girl."

"I have dreamed about this moment my whole life," Mike Eli said on stage. He then offered this advice to up-and-comers, "Follow your dreams, believe in yourself and do it."

Among other early honours, record of the year went to Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson for their duet, "Don't You Wanna Stay," and video of the year, announced backstage, went to Toby Keith for his popular party song, "Red Solo Cup."

The show started with Shelton and McEntire trading barbs with each other. She chided him about his strong year crossing over into mainstream TV stardom, and he teasing her about her veteran status in country music.

Carrie Underwood sang her new rock tune "Good Girl," and other early performers included Chris Young singing "Save Water, Drink Beer," and the Zac Brown Band and The Band Perry.
