Graphic designer and creative consultant Gayantha claims  that he's “always had a passion for dressing well” brought about by his weekend shopping escapades with his mom and sister growing up. An active instagrammer, Gayantha uses his personal Instagram to “promote local style and great venues and vendors via @stylistlk and promoting the #wowlife”. His only regret is not being able to “support the amazing local designers that are emerging out of showcases like Colombo Fashion Week.” Fashion savvy Gayantha shares his style tips, must haves and his take on following trends.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is a diverse expression of my Jesus, my mood and the occasion based on what’s trending with modern Sri Lankan sensibilities. My favorite D&G frames or what I found in pettah whilst on an errand for a client, style is more important than what fashion is trying to tell you everyday.

What - in your opinion - are must haves in a man's closet?

-    A pair of black skinny jeans
-    An accessory you can wear with anything
-    Black comfy loafers
-    A white long sleeve shirt
-    A crew neck slogan tshirt
-    And branded underwear that matches every outfit you’ll ever wear

What's your take on following fashion trends?

I believe trends are a good way of keeping track of what to expect at the retail store, or at the next online sale you visit. As a stylist and as someone who works with the fashion industry closely, it’s essential to know and inform my fans and my client base on how to dress better than the rest, and give them a competitive edge in looking the best and the brightest in any room or situation they walk into #stylistlkrecs

How important is grooming for men?

Grooming is an essential part of any look I engineer for myself or my clients; Dressing well is half of an entire look. In the digital age we live in, no man can risk the impact of having a haircut that isn’t clean and current, or skin that doesn’t reflect the best of his health. Your #tbt should be something fun, not something you can understand being ridiculed for.

What's your personal grooming ritual?

Every morning I start with a careful evaluation of my facial hair for any trims or alterations with a special shaving kit I own. Then I move onto a careful oral and skin care regimen followed by a shower sometimes with conditioner, but regularly a mint based shampoo. Then I blow-dry or towel dry and style my hair before putting on any clothes I might have laid out if I had time before I headed for my shower.

One thing you hate that men do or don't do with regard to fashion or grooming?

Wear oversized clothing. Each man, no matter his size or fitness level has a certain fit that suits him well. Just because your waist size is 36, doesn’t mean you can’t wear a size 34 pair of pants and look amazing. Take the time to try out different clothing you like, there is bound to be a size that fits you that might not be what the rack is telling you.
