Presented by the Past Pupils Association of Bishop’s College, the much awaited Sthri Lanka was staged at the Bishop’s College Auditorium on 18 and 19 February 2012.

Sthri Lanka weaves the historical into the contemporary using current issues. Four women have to make decisions that affect everyone around them; three are ancient queens and the fourth is Akki who has chosen to break with the norm in her choice of a life partner. It sounds so simple when summarised, but the contexts and characters are complex and ambiguous.

No one knows what the right thing to do is and everyone has to make the best of circumstances that are not in their control. If that sounds like life, you’re right! In the case of the queens, an entire nation was at stake. In the case of Akki, her decision will affect herself, her family and friends. It is the power of her freedom of choice that causes the conflict and gives her the authority lacked by other characters, who do not exercise freedom of choice.

The music was composed by well known music teacher,  Shyama Perera, the Director of the “STUDIO  fine and performing arts academy”. The play was directed by Nafeesa Amirudeen, a familiar name to theatre. The writer, Sandra Fernando, is a writer and a teacher of English. The choreography was handled by Venuri Perera, a  renowned dancer  and teacher of dance.
