The rape and murder of Sivaloganadan Vidhya, an 18 year old schoolgirl in Jaffna raised a lot of concerns. As in most violent crimes, the victim's photo is out there for people to see. But shouldn't those charged with violent crimes such as this be named and shamed, with their photos out there for everyone to see?
The Daily Mirror Life gave an ear to a few young voices to listen to their thoughts about incidents of this nature and the role of media:
Heshani
“Those charged should be punished. They should never be sent back to society in my point of view. I got goosebumps when I heard about the incident. The media should always educate the public about these incidents but shouldn’t exaggerate any information.”
Suranga
“These rapists should be punished. In fact they should be taught a good lesson. The media has a role to play in incidents like this. It is from media that we get to know what is right and wrong. There is no problem in naming and shaming the culprits because if they have done a crime they should be ready to face embarrassment.”
Priyadarshana
“Naming and shaming should be a part of the punishment. Even if they return to society their close associates would still be able to become criminals. So in my point of view they should remain behind bars for their entire lifetime.”
Tharika
“Incidents like this should be given maximum publicity. In fact I was shocked to hear the news. Nobody would want to live in a society of rapists and other criminals. They should be punished.”
Jayanthi
“Rapists and criminals should be identified and given maximum punishment. I feel sorry for the Tamil girl and her family. These incidents should never happen in a civilised country like Sri Lanka.”
Nishantha
“People only exaggerate incidents like these. Those accused should be sent behind bars. They will make no positive impact on society even if they return. Naming and shaming should be done for any criminal. Problem is many of them are protected by powerful influences or by the law.”
Hasanthi
“Better if media gives publicity to an extent that it gives a strong message to society. It was quite terrible to hear a story of this nature. Even the elderly should be aware of the whereabouts of their children at least from now on.”

May 26, 2015 at 12:00 amPERPETRATORS MUST BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE EXPEDITIOUSLY AND IF FOUND GUILTY MUST BE BEHEADED IN PUBLIC AS THEY DO IN SAUDI ARABIA

May 27, 2015 at 12:00 amComments seem one sided. bad journalism. Someone charged with a crime only means they are accused of the crime, there is an assumption in innocence until they are convicted. less than 1% of rape cases result in conviction, so naming and shaming will just add to the damages of the accused.

May 28, 2015 at 12:00 amThis is a henious crime, one of the worst. The perpitrator must be brought to justice without further delay. This is just disgraceful. Its one of the worst crimes committed. rape and muder. They should all recieve the death penalty no other form of punishment is warranted. Just hang them all if found guilty.
Gamarala says:
May 28, 2015 at 12:00 amWe in Sri Lanka need not follow the barbarous methods of public killing as done in arachic Saudi Arabia as suggeted by Mr. Zarook. But the perpitrators of this henious crime must be brougt to justice and punishcd according to our laws.

May 28, 2015 at 12:00 am2 more rape case incident took place in North even before dust get settled in Vidyas case. A 7 year girl was gang raped then a 13 year girl. Maximum punishment needed before we climb on to the number 01 spot of rapist country

May 28, 2015 at 12:00 amI am deeply disturbed by the ruthlessness and evilness of the gang rape. After reading countless articles on the crime it is clear that the action is being stalled and that there are political influence involved. My sympathies for the deceased family and I hope the convicted rapists get the same treatment they metted out so cruelly to this innocent young girl. I hope justice will be served and the death penalty should be brought back to execute such low forms of human being from our society.

May 28, 2015 at 12:00 amDEAR MR.GAMARALA, BEHEADING IN PUBLIC MAY BE AN ARCHAIC FORM OF PUNISHMENT. BUT IT SENDS A STRONG MESSAGE ACROSS. MAY I HUMBLY POINT OUT THAT THE PEOPLE OF THE NORTH TOO WANT THIS VERY FORM OF PUNISHMENT. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT WILL BE HIS POSITION IF MISS.DIVYA HAPPENS TO BE A DEAR AND NEAR ONE TO MR. GAMARALA .
