An extremely successful tour, a record breaking sellout and after all the hype, he is finally here, Russell Peters landed in Sri Lanka for the final show of his latest tour “Notorious”. Speaking to Life Online in a quick interview, Peters said this has been by far the most successful tour in his entire career.
The comedian woke up to worldwide success mainly due to the line which he was threatened with as a child by his father “Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad” which found it’s way to Youtube. Russel has many inspirations but his two favourites are his Dad and three year old daughter who has got the knack for imitating him.
Speaking about Youtube Russel says “It’s a great way to get your name out there, but as a performer I can’t help it if someone watches one of my shows on Youtube, then comes to a live performance and complains that the jokes are the same. That’s not how it works.”
When questioned as to why his previous visit to Sri Lanka was not as hyped as this he says “That was a very small gig, I can’t even remember where it was!” (at which point his brother who also happens to be his manager pipes in and says “It was at the Waters Edge).
Speaking about ending his current tour he says he is happy about it but sad as well, "It's just like sending your child off to school, while he/she is away you can make another one,” he jokes.
“To me Sri Lanka is like a really clean India, the last time I was here you guys didn’t have a highway” with his wicked sense of humour he questions “by the way, who let the dogs out?”
Peters also adds that there is only one thing he does not crack jokes about and that is religion mainly due to the fact that a lot of people are finicky about it.
However, wealth and fame didn’t come easy to him; there was a time when he did not have a cent in his hands “I was dead a*s broke” he says; for doing the show that made it to Youtube he got paid $7500 and as soon as he got the cheque he remembers writing it off which made him broke but a little out of debt.
However destinies are made and not written, and Peters has gone on to become literally the biggest name in comedy and he is finally here to perform in what is said to be “The greatest of them all.”
