The Drama Society of S. Thomas’ College took to the stage last weekend with Michael Cooney’s farce, ‘Cash on Delivery’.
The play revolves around the life of Eric Swan, a jobless man who benefits from the generous cheques sent by the Social Security Department to his imaginary tenants.
Things go awry when the overly inquisitive Mr. Jenkins is sent by Miss Cowper from the Social Security Department to the Swan residence to check on the truths and claims made by Eric.
Blackmailed by Eric, Normal Basset, the actual tenant at the Swan residence is forcibly involved in the web of lies and characters spun by the landowner. Linda, Eric’s wife, oblivious to his lies, begins to suspect that her husband is a closeted cross dresser and brings in Revd. Chapman to have a talk about his behaviour.
From impersonating imaginary characters, to dressing up as women and mixing up identities, ‘Cash on Delivery’ proved to be a good comedy involving word play.
However, at times actors were a bit too loud for the audience. Overall the play was quite enjoyable as it was interesting to see witty humour than the usual slapstick comedy which most Sri Lankans seemed to be learning to master, for some unfortunate reason.
With regards to acting, I think the cast did a good job especially given the fact that this was the first time for most of them.

I thought that the acting was slick but they were shouting a bit too much. Overall, it was good for a school production.

Most of the main parts were performed by newcomers and I was very impressed with their performances particularly Jodash, Wasika and Sanjit. As the senior students who have more experience in acting weren’t allowed to take part in the play because of the upcoming A/L exams, the grade 12 students had to step in and I think they did a good job. At times their voice projection was too loud but I think they did a good job overall.

I think the play itself was funny but I thought it could have been delivered better so that the play would have been funnier.
