I found myself at the Lionel Wendt eagerly anticipating the start of the much hyped musical of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast presented by Mystical Rose International and Directed by Indu Dharmasena.
As the eerie music for the intro began and the narrator started on his little script about how the spoilt and selfish prince was turned into the beast, the feeling that I was in for a treat began to churn within me.
Belle’s (Sanwada Dharmasena) entrance to the stage was graceful and elegant. Her singing was quite pitchy yet she managed to pull it off. The character that stood out easily that night was Gaston played by Gehan Cooray who owned the stage and sang and recited Gaston’s songs and lines with no effort.
Another brilliant performance came from Mrs. Potts played by Lilanka Boteju, her performance of the song “Beauty and the Beast” gave the audience goose bumps and was executed with much perfection.
The musical direction was handled by Soundarie David and the songs with the chorus singers were exemplary, especially “Be our Guest.”
Costumes were top notch. It was clear that Indu had spared no expenses with this production and each costume looked like it had been just picked up from the movie and placed on the actors. So hats off to the team!
However the play failed to live up to expectations with some of the lead roles going off pitch on a number of occasions. The play was also quite long and the lighting could have been a bit better.
On a closing note the evening was an enjoyable one and as always, I would be looking forward to Indu’s next production!
