Brightsparks showcase high end fashion on Day 2 of HSBC CFW Resort 2014

Day 2 of HSBC Colombo Fashion Week Resortwear 2014 concluded on a high note with the last of the Bright Sparks showcasing their collections.  Drawing inspiration from coloured beach huts to the exotic orchid, the collections on show were exciting, innovative and showed great promise for the future of design in Sri Lanka.

Peronie Stefel

The winner of the CFW Fashion Design Fund, Peronie presented a collection inspired by the exotic orchid flower in terms of colour and the intricate veins found on its petals were used as a motif in her designs to show depth.  A graduate of the Academy of Design, Peronie’s collection using batik and embroidery was chic with a hint of sophistication.

“Similar to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo who used as a means of self expression my muse is myself”

Aseka De Silva

Using the Araliya flower as the main inspiration for her collection of batik prints, Aseka also used the thorns of the Bouganvillea plant as inspiration for her stud embellishments. An alumna of the Raffles Institute of Higher Education, Aseka’s collection was fresh, edgy and funky.

“This is the first time I have used Batik in my collection and I am happy with the result”

Udaya Wickramasinghe

Inspired by the textures and patterns from Sri Lankan woodcarvings, this graduate from the University of Moratuwa focused on knitwear. Using hand knitted yarns and luxurious skills, Udaya presented an interesting collection of ensembles.

“I have incorporated a synergy of art, architecture and a nature into my designs”

Shayani Alwis

Fashion entrepreneur Shayani, who has her own label and store Shay. Int, showcased a collection inspired by autumn flowers and the colours of the hawk. A graduate of the Academy of Design, Shayani used lace and chiffon in her collection.

“I love the autumnal colours and that was my inspiration for this collection”

Hasara Kulatunga

This graduate of the Academy of Desig, showcased a collection inspired by pastel coloured beach huts in Spain and England. Colourful, playful and preppy, she used various chemical techniques like burnout printing to create patters giving her fabric a translucent effect.

“This collection called Sail Away with Me was inspired by Pastel coloured beach huts in Spain and England”
