views 3230HSBC Colombo Fashion Week Resort Show 2014 got off to a sizzling start at Jetwing Beach in Negombo.
Day 1 began with the Bright Spark show where 6 young designers handpicked by Ajai Vir Sing the. driving force behind Colombo Fashion Week. showcased their designs.
The young designers, some fresh out of design school, displayed collections that showed great promise.
Jayani Perera
A graduate of the Raffles Institute of High Education, Jayani’s collection was inspired by the beauty and intricacy of traditional Beeralu handcrafted lace which she feels needs recognition and preservation.
Palika Withrana
Palika presented a psychedelic collection incorporating distorted imagery in edgy designs. A graduate from Birmingham City University, she has her heart set on experimental fashion with a love for incorporating mixed media and fabrics to create fashion forward designs.
Melanie Grey
Enamoured by mesh which she used as a reference point to create different prints for her collection, this graduate from the Academy of Design presented a collection in electric blue and white using lightweight jersey, linen and woven fabrics.
Shivoni Cooray
With a firm belief that fashion gives her unfettered freedom of expression in discovering herself in addition to self satisfaction, Shivoni presented a brightly coloured exotic collection. A graduate from the University of Moratuwa, Shivoni has drawn her inspiration from the creatures of the wild. Her designs incorporate the traditional Sri Lankan Batik craft which she wants to contribute in both admiration and preservation.
Heshan de Silva
Transitioning from menswear to womenswear with ease, Heshan presented an interesting collection of abstract prints inspired by the vibrant Mexican culture and painter Frida Kahlo. A graduate from RMIT Australia, Heshan is known for his signature colour blocking and geometric design.
Binari Schendra
Inspired by Japanese origami, Binari used bright prints and textures in her collection embellished with Beeralu lace. A graduate of the Raffles Institute of Higher Education, Binari’s Japanese and Sri Lankan fusion collection contained dip dyeing techniques.
