Pale and interesting! Jessica Chastain, Amy Adams and Charlize Theron lead glamour on Academy Awards red carpet in light gowns

Hollywood's finest leading ladies lead the charge in pale and interesting dresses at Tinseltown's biggest night of the year, the Academy Awards, on Sunday.

Jessica Chastain may not have taken home the Best Actress trophy for Zero Dark Thirty, but she will certainly be named one of the best dressed stars of the evening.

The gorgeous 35-year-old looked elegant and ethereal in her sequined Armani Prive nude gown which showed off her slim figure as she made a grand entrance at the Dolby Theatre in LA, with her fiery hair in soft waves.

Old Hollywood glamour: Jessica Chastain was a vision in a figure-hugging nude gown by Armani Prive

'It's very Happy Birthday Mr President,' she laughed of her decision to pay homage to old Hollywood as she chatted to E!'s Ryan Seacrest.

Her fellow redhead and Oscar nominee Amy Adams was equally striking on the red carpet as she arrived in a powder blue princess dress by Oscar de la Renta.

Jennifer Lawrence stuck to her favourite designer Dior, wearing one of their Haute Couture gowns. But it was the actress' most dramatic look so far, and the Silver Linings Playbook star was reminiscent of a bride in her white strapless confection with full train.

Pretty as a princess: Amy was equally beautiful in a powder blue gown by Oscar de la Renta as she posed with fiance Darren Le Gallo

She's got the white stuff: Charlize Theron chose a structured Dior dress which showed off some cleavage

Here comes the bride: Jennifer Lawrence made a bold move in a bridal inspired Dior Haute Couture dress

How did she get in the car?: The Silver Linings Playbook star, who took home the Best Actress title, was gliding down the carpet in the meringue style creation

She's a vision: Anne Hathaway was reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn as she made a statement in a baby pink Prada dress

Charlize Theron also wore a white Dior dress, but went for a more severe look with structured tailoring, also showing some cleavage thanks to the bodice's low-cut.
Anne Hathaway was stunning in a baby pink Prada dress which was something of a risk for the Les Miserables starlet, while the likes of Naomi Watts, Catherine Zeta Jones and Halle Berry chose metallics.

Kerry Washington was a bright spark in a red Miu Miu dress with an embellished bust, while Zoe Saldana also chose a frock with detailing across her chest, designed by Alexis Mabille Couture, and Olivia Munn followed suit in red and gold Marchesa.

Plenty of celebrities chose heavily embellished creations, including Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen, Sandra Bullock in Elie Saab, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart, who arrived on crutches in a Reem Acra dress.

Classic with a twist:  Salma Hayek and Halle Berry , both chose black dresses with glitzy detailing

Glamour girls: Amanda Seyfried (L) wore an embellished Alexander McQueen frock while Kristen Stewart also focused on detailing in her Reem Acra

Hot metal: Naomi Watts was stunning in silver while Catherine Zeta Jones opted for a golden Zuhair Murad creation

All about the detailing: Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille Couture and Kerry Washington in Miu Miu both opted for dresses with embellished busts

Loving husbands: Ben Affleck held onto Jennifer Garner's hand (L) while Channing Tatum cradled Jenna Dewan's baby bump

Fashion Police hosts Giuliana Rancic and Kelly Osbourne were covering the star-studded red carpet, so made sure they looked their best without detracting from the actors in attendance.

Both TV presenters picked black gowns, with Giuliana creating curves in a strapless Rafael Cennamo dress while Kelly chose a flowing number by Tony Ward with diamante and sheer detailing.

Giuliana had lopped off her famously long locks into a shorter and edgier style, claiming she had woken up that morning with the sudden urge to go for the chop.
Kristin Chenoweth looked like a princess in her fairytale inspired gown, also designed by Tony Ward, which boasted sparkling silver detailing. She also wore Simon G jewellery.

Making sure he's picture perfect: Jennier Aniston adjusted Justin Theroux's tie before they posed for photos together

Mutual adoration: Adele and Jennifer were seen gushing over one another as they made friends on the red carpet

Seeing red: It's a hard look to pull off on a red carpet, but Jennifer Aniston and Sally Field took a risk and opted for scarlet frocks

Arresting in ebony: Fashion Police hosts Giuliana Rancic (L) and Kelly Osbourne chose gorgeous black gowns for Sunday's ceremony, with Giuliana in Rafael Cennamo and Kelly wearing Tony Ward

Black magic: (L-R) Adele, who wore Jenny Packham and Nicole Kidman played it safe in black for the evening

Plus one: Bradley Cooper brought his mother (L) as his date while George Clooney was joined by Stacy Keibler

Great chemistry: Co-stars Jennifer and Bradley goofed around ahead of the ceremony but continue to deny that they are a couple

The actress and singer was seen shaking hands with Kelly Rowland as they ran into each other on the red carpet.

While most stars opted for pretty gowns, Kelly brought some sex appeal in her Donna Karan Atelier dress, which had a sweetheart cut white bodice and black skirt with a saucy split up one side, and Naomie Harris, Samantha Barks and Brandi Glanville were other stars who decided to flash the flesh.

Maria Menounos also decided to turn heads and ensured she stood out in her shocking pink Romona Keveza dress which clung to her enviable figure thanks to its fishtail cut.

Although Ben Affleck was shockingly snubbed by the Academy for a Best Director nod, his movie Argo still took home the most coveted gong of the evening in the form of Best Picture.

Blonde bombshell: Reese Witherspoon looked cute in cobalt blue as she gave photographers an eyeful on the red carpet

Fairytale glamour: Kristin Chenoweth (L) also opted for black in a Tony Ward dress with glittering silver detailing across the bodice, while Kelly Rowland's Donna Karan Atelier gown had a white bodice

Best supporting wives: Nominees Hugh Jackman and Christoph Waltz had their better halves on hand to help quash their nerves

Other films which had been vying for Best Picture are Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Amour and Django Unchained.

Jennifer Lawrence took home Best Actress after competing against Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts, Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis.

Amour star Emmanuelle, who would have been the oldest winner in history, celebrated her 86th birthday at the ceremony.

Gold star: Renee Zellweger highlighted her pert bottom in a shimmering gold Carolina Herrera creation

Feeling all bright: Jane Fonda and Marcia Gay Harden brought some colour to the red carpet

An exciting evening: Best Actress nominee Emanuelle Riva (L) was also celebrating her 86th birthday, while Samantha Barks was getting set to perform with her Les Miserables co-stars

Bang on trend: Midnight blue has been a regular red carpet choice for stars recently and Jennifer Hudson (L) and Helen Hunt jumped on the bandwagon for the awards

Meanwhile a win for Quvenzhane for Beasts of the Southern Wild would have placed her as the youngest winning actor ever at just nine years old.

Daniel Day-Lewis was awarded the Best Actor prize for his role in Lincoln, after facing competition from Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington and Joaquin Phoenix.

The event was hosted by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, whose movie Ted was up for the Music (Original Song) award for Everybody Needs a Best Friend, but lost to Skyfall.

Lights, camera, action: The red carpet was lined with the toast of Tinseltown as the nominees awaited their fate

Mr Editor where is the rest of my comment? It was relevant to the first part. When you arbitrarily cut in mid sentence a comment, the meaning is all distorted. Please do not do this, its not the first time it has happend to one of my comments. Thank you. Gamarala

Many people commented very negatively on Kristen Stewarts appearance last night. Most of them did not realize that she had cut her foot on some glass shards two days ago and actually came to the Dolby Theater on two crutches, which she left on the side as Kristen with Daniel Radcliffe were Presenters for "Achievement in Product design". Kristen hobbled on stage without the crutches in great pain.
