This week we feature Sol Tamargo, a photographer from Mexico. She is part of Del-Sol Photography, a Mexican based travelling wedding photographers group.

Anyone who goes through her blog or her facebook fan page would find her work magical and momentous. The colours and the moments she captures on her camera are just incredible.

What makes Sol and her team so special is that they've been recognised as one of The Top 10 Wedding Photographers of 2009 by American Photo Magazine.

Here are some of the international recognitions they have gotten during the past few years.

Sol Tamargo says, “My main photography education has been in the field, practising and reading and watching other photographers work.  I also constantly seek feedback and constructive criticism; it's how we all grow!  When I met my husband he took my photography to a new level of technical understanding.”

Sol is a great lover of the beach and she maintains an active lifestyle with activities like running, biking and scuba diving and cross fit training.

Here is Sol in an exclusive interview with www.life.lk

You've been named one of The Top 10 Wedding Photographers of 2009. Can you tell me your secret in 3 sentences?

1. Wish with all your heart to be good.
2. Learn the technique, but let your heart guide your camera.
3. Be different.

Meeting your life partner was like a match made in heaven. Do you believe your skills were strengthened after teaming up with your husband?

My photography got a huge jump when Matt came into my life, he taught me many technical "secrets", he's still the force behind my technical skills :)

What were the sacrifices you made in your life to come this far?

I totally changed my life, I had to leave my family, friends, city, religion to follow my heart and be in a place where everything lined up and the universe gave me the gift of succeeding doing what my passion is... photography.

As a destination wedding photographer what countries have your shoots taken you to and what are your favourites of them all?

I love travelling! It charges me with new ideas! So far I've shot couples in love in different states in Mexico and in the USA, Canada, Panama, Cuba, Punta Cana, St Lucia, St John, Bahamas, Hong Kong and Thailand.

I loved them all... just the fact of being in a new place is inspiring, although I LOVE culture and my favourite weddings are the ones where there's exotic elements, lots of colour, and spirituality.

I would LOVE to go to Sri Lanka!

Other than photography I see you are engaged in various sports, activities etc. Can you tell us more about your extracurricular activities?

I believe that to be good at what you do, you must be happy and in balance, therefore putting "me" Sol, my body, health and spirituality first is very important to me. I love exercising, I recently started this new sport called "cross fit" ... It is hardcore, but it gives me so much energy and endorphins that make me very happy :). When I don't do cross fit my favourite activity is running on the beach and swimming.

I'm also very fortunate to live in a place full of natural wonders like the cenotes, I love exploring the caves, free diving, snorkelling the reefs, reading and taking photos with my iphone.

I also love eating healthy, so part of my daily routine involves shopping for fresh ingredients to make my "Sol's famous smoothies"... I do this every morning after exercising.

With all of above activities, how do you manage your time?

Making "lists" and prioritising, and delegating as much as possible. Having a team of talented people to help me is the key to be able to have the life that I have.

You might have seen some of the work some major Sri Lankan photographers do. What are your honest opinions about our work?

I don't have the pleasure to know the work of many Sri Lanka photographers, but from what I've seen on the internet doing a search, the photography is on its way to being better. Your weddings are a dream to photograph! I would die to be documenting them, so full of colour, details and of course gorgeous people... they look like fairytales to me!

The most memorable shoot?

Talking about weddings, I would say my first Indian wedding was very memorable. I travelled to the USA to shoot in a small city, the bride was Christian, the groom Hindu, she was like a princess and he a prince. The whole day was full of incredible moments, colour, gorgeous people, traditions, and dancing!!! I was in heaven!!! I have never seen something like that, the groom arriving on a white horse, the bride carried in a special chair by her brothers, the ceremony site, the dresses... It was incredible!! It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!

Sri Lanka is seeing a boom in photography with so many gaining access to professional cameras. Your advice to them?

Be smart about your choices, prefer fixed lenses vs zooms.. I wish I knew about that "secret" before, and use your eyes to see composition, it’s not the best camera that makes the best photographer.. but the eye and the heart behind it.

  1. Sirisena says:

Why are you talking about Hindu wedding? Hindu wedding is supported by Zionist people who are against the Muslim people around the world. As Sri Lankans we must show solidarity with the poor suffering Muslims who are victims of Hindu and Zionist fascism. Shame on Life magazine for praising Hindu weddings! This is a Buddhist country!

  2. Rom says:

HAIYOO SIRISENA!!!! Your names says it all!! What are you on about a Buddhist country and Hindus and Muslims, Its people like you who create communal riots, At least learn from past mistakes which took 30yrs to end, Creating hatred among,

Please Hurry!!! You need immediate attention!!!

  6. Faqi says:

    # Sirisena ; What a racist comment. Most papers in the west would not entertain a comment such as yours. Its purely racist. What is wrong in describing a Hindu wedding in the USA by a Mexican photographer? What has it to do with a Buddhist country? We all belong to the human family. Your comment is disgusting to say the least to belittle HIndus and Jews. In all communities there are the good & the bad. We all know from your comments, what category you fall into.

  7. prasad says:

  11. mufaris says:
