The Kennel Association of Sri Lanka held the 78th annual All Breed Champion Dog Show 2012 on 4 March at the “Sathutu Uyana” Vihara Mahadevi Park.
The All Breed Champion Dog Show looks for the best in all the pedigreed breeds that are registered with the Kennel. The dogs are chosen not by comparing them to each other, but by comparing them to international standards set for their specific breed. The judges look at the head, coat, angularity and movement of each dog, as well as their individual personality which should match the personality that is attributed to their breed.
For instance, Judge Col. Kenneth Roy, the President of the Pakistan Kennel Association tells me, when judging a Rottweiler, classed in the ‘working dog’ category; the judges are looking at the dog’s personality to see if it matches the calm, reserved attitude that’s associated with the breed. Whereas a Pug, classed in the ‘toy dog group’ is expected to show a friendly companionable attitude. All these are taken into consideration when picking the best dog in any breed category.
Another noteworthy category is the ‘Junior Handler’ category, designed to increase awareness, caring and co-operation between dogs and children. The judging is based on the individual evaluation of the skill of each junior handler, not their dog. This year’s participants in the Junior Handler category were between the ages of 6 and 10 years.
“This show is being judged very well and is well organized. There are a lot of people here and that’s good for raising interest and awareness about dogs. The one critique I would give is that the handling of dogs by some owners needs to be improved. I would suggest a course to teach them how to handle their pets. Other than that, this is one of the best shows I’ve been to and I’m really enjoying it. I’d like to thank the Sri Lanka Kennel Association for the wonderful hospitality they’ve shown me,” said Col. Roy.
A special event during the show was the Air Force Dog Display, where leading trained Air Force dogs and handlers put on their best showcase skills.
