The last weekend was packed with so many events that many people were wondering which one to attend. I found myself heading towards the British School Auditorium to watch “Vocal Enigma” present “The Playlist.” The show promised to include hits that you would find on almost everybody’s Ipod, CD Players, hence the apt title.
Many members of the audience had begun to call in frantically asking organisers to delay the show due to the heavy rains that prevailed, therefore the organisers did oblige and delayed the start by 15 minutes.
The show kicked off with “I Belive in you” by Il Divo - although the harmonies blended in quite well the soloist did struggle hitting the high notes and tended to go off key in the process as well.
However the show did progress from there on with hits such as Viva la Vida, Somebody That I used to Know and Suragana Kirilliye.
Kicking off the second half was the instrumentalist who had the audience at the edge of their seats. What caught the writer’s eye most was that fact that director Maneesh Dasanayake made use of the multiple talents of most members of Vocal Enigma.
For example Vanya Goonetilake on the Violin, Ashwin Joseph and Dineli Sun totally nailed it with their beat boxing abilities.
However on the downside, the members of the choir could have done much more with their facial expressions in communicating the emotions of the songs to the audience.
Nevertheless the show was quite entertaining and I certainly can’t wait to hear more from the enthusiastic bunch of Vocal Enigma.
