In April 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton were on top of the world - mere days away from their nuptials, they were the most talked-about and reported-on couple in the world, admired to the point that they were named in TIME magazine's 100 most influential people of the year.

But this year, poor Prince William has been ousted and his throne usurped by none other than his sister-in-law Pippa Middleton, who appears in this year's list alongside her sister Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

TIME describes the list as the people who 'inspire us, entertain us, challenge us and change our world. Meet the breakouts, pioneers, moguls, leaders and icons who make up this year's TIME 100.'

Other people deemed to be influential by TIME magazine included singer Adele, this year's sporting sensation New York Jets player Tim Tebow and his basketball-playing counterpart Jeremy Lin.

Warren Buffett also appeared on the list, with an ode to the 81-year-old investment advisor written by President Obama - who also appeared on the list.

The list of the world's most influential newsmakers, Mr. Obama wrote a three paragraph dedication extolling Mr. Buffett's moral values in addition to his economic prowess.

He wrote: 'Today, Warren is not just one of the world's richest men but also one of the most admired and respected. He has devoted the vast majority of his wealth to those around the world who are suffering or sick or in need of help.

'And he uses his stature as a leader to press others of great means to do the same.'

The ninth annual list also includes Mitt Romney, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Hillary Clinton, Ron Paul, Angela Merkel, Christine Lagarde, "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E L James and many others.

Several celebrities made the list this year, including Rihanna, Chelsea Handler, Claire Danes, Kristen Wiig, Louis C.K., Stephen Colbert and Viola Davis.

The list features 54 international figures from 37 countries and also includes several controversial figures, such as Syrian President Bashar Assad, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar.

It's divided into five categories: Moguls, Breakouts, Icons, Pioneers and Leaders.
There are 38 women on the 2012 Time 100 -- more than ever before.
