Peter Kuruvita in Colombo
Famed culinary icon Peter Kuruvita wears many hats. Apart from being an award winning chef and restaurateur, he’s also an author, television presenter for his culinary shows, industry speaker and restaurant consultant.
On his most recent trip to Sri Lanka and importantly the centerpiece of his visit, Kuruvita designed a menu for a dinner hosted by the High Commissioner of Australia to Sri Lanka Robyn Mudie. The extensive menu comprised a range of starters, mains and desserts, for which the ingredients had been shipped from Australia, thus promoting the country’s fresh gourmet produce. Australian fresh seafood, premium lamb and beef, organic fruits and vegetables are known to represent the highest quality available on the global market.
“With this menu, I shall be highlighting the amazing, fresh produce Australia is known for, in addition to a selection of wines,” said Kuruvita. He also hosted a gourmet dinner the next day, open to the public, which was in collaboration with the hotel. For this dinner, he used fresh ingredients sourced locally.
A notable highlight of his visit also included the master class he held for the Sri Lankan Chef’s Guild and Australian William Angliss Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management.
“I want Sri Lankan cuisine to be highlighted all around the world and be given the same recognition that Indian and Japanese cuisine receive. It can be presented in a finer manner and this island has a great selection of fresh seafood so it needs to be highlighted,” explained Kuruvita.
He has plans to tour Sri Lanka later this year, in addition to the Andes mountain range.
His very first television series titled ‘My Sri Lanka with Peter Kuruvita’ took viewers on a culinary journey around the island with Peter, which showcased Sri Lanka’s rich culture and culinary diversity.
The television series was nominated for ‘The Rockies’ Banff World Media Awards 2012’, and Kuruvita was nominated for an Australian ‘Logies 2012 Award’ in the “The Best New Male Talent” category.
In 2012, Kuruvita toured the islands of Indonesia, Vanuatu, the Philippines and Cook Islands for his next television series titled ‘Island Feast with Peter Kuruvita’.
For his third television series, Kuruvita toured Mexico for ‘Mexican Fiesta’, which has received high ratings in February and March this year.
He opened his very first restaurant named Flying Fish Restaurant & Bar in Sydney, and he successfully led operations as its Executive Chef for eight years. In 2008, he replicated the restaurant in partnership with the Starwood Hotel Group at Flying Fish, located at the Sheraton Fiji Resort.
He went on to open another restaurant named Steakhouse by Peter Kuruvita at The Westin, Denarau Island in February 2013. In May the same year, Noosa Beach House was opened in partnership with Sheraton Noosa Resort.
And lastly, his newest venture is Flying Fish Tokoriki, at Sheraton Tokoriki in Fiji.

May 12, 2014 at 12:00 amGreat young man from Australia who is doing a great service to enhance the country's reputation the way he knows best. His father who was from SriLanka used to help lot of SriLankan young guys who came to Sydney in early 1980. Son seems to pocess the same friendly and unassuming nature of his father.

May 13, 2014 at 12:00 amI have met Peter at many "tastes of Sydney gatherings" his knowledge of food and the presentation of the meals dished out makes the meal more delicious to consume. I have also eaten at his Flying Fish restaurant and bar in Sydney absolutely fine dining. Very down to earth guy has not lost his touch of growing up in Ceylon like most of us. He loves what he is doing and it is the passion in his voice and heart that makes the food so tasty. keep up the good work Peter you make cooking look so easy
