Peplum has become quite a hit in the fashion industry even though it was not foreseen to make a big hit when it was showcased in 2012. For those who have not been hit by the fervor for peplum, a peplum is a short overskirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress.

When the peplum began its comeback, most of those assumed that they were only watching a catwalk trend that would stay on the catwalk, because this trend is not for many since the peplum will not make a person look thin and it does not create that attractive look that many would want to indulge in and it is a bit ‘costumey’. The only reason every high-street retailer would put a peplum into production was to ensure their visibility in the trend pages, but few would have backed the peplum as a commercial hit.

Peplums are fun and they are most certainly not a look that only string beans can wear because the whole point of a peplum is that highlights the waist-to-hip curve, so it looks a bit odd when worn without one. So the peplum is definitely for the curvy figure.

By adding an additional horizontal line by means of a belt etc. across your hips a peplum shortens your leg length. On the catwalk, one popular way for a peplum to be styled was with an above-the-knee skirt, and ankle boots. All is well, as long as you have the catwalk-standard height. If wearing a peplum, the skirt length should end at the knee, or just below, where your leg shape narrows.

The classic Dior peplum, of 1947, was at its most elegant when worn with a pencil skirt in this length. The wearer must follow this natural break in the line of your legs for your skirt hem, rather than adding another horizontal line. And be wary of ankle boots and ankle-strapped sandals but the court shoe is the best companion for the peplum.

To make the peplum more flattering pair it up with trousers. This is more flattering on short legs, and even more importantly it immediately modernises a look. But whatever is said about the Peplum it is here and those who are brave must embrace it but with taste!
