I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that pimples are the MOST annoying thing in the world! They just show up, uninvited, on a day when you need to look your absolute best! When they do arrive, you can’t stop thinking about it, touching it hoping, it has disappeared, looking in the mirror and focusing only on that part of your face and telling yourself how ugly you look!
Sure, a little concealer and powder can cover that bad boy up, but caking makeup on angry skin, isn’t the best way to get rid of a pimple because this further clogs your pores and worsens the problem! Yes, popping that bad boy might seem like the easiest, fastest thing to do but then you’re left with a mighty red patch! And we all know that popping pimples isn’t the prettiest, healthiest activity out there!
So let me tell you a few home remedies that have worked for me. I’m a firm believer of anything DIY and I’ve tried so many different things from apple cider vinegar to toothpaste and I wish I could say they have all worked for me but unfortunately not.
Below are some of the few remedies I swear by.
Toothpaste
Although toothpaste isn’t going to magically get rid of your pimple overnight, it may help calm it down and reduce the pain. Although your pimple is still going to be there in the morning, it’ll look slightly less horrendous. Wash your face well then use a tiny bit of toothpaste on your pimple and leave it overnight.
Garlic
This is a remedy I discovered recently through YouTube so I gave it a go! Garlic is a potent antioxidant so it functions well to remove infections from the skin. It contains a component called allicin which makes it anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Just skin a clove of garlic, scrape the flesh using a fork and rub the juices on to your pimple (make sure you’ve washed your face thoroughly first) I warn you though, it may sting and smell awkward, but the results will be worth it!
Turmeric
My turmeric and yoghurt mask is my favourite DIY mask in the entire world! Turmeric has antiseptic and antibacterial properties which help fight pimples and reduce redness due to its yellow colour. I use it as a spot treatment by mixing it with a tiny bit of water and applying it on my skin using a cotton ball. Leave this on overnight and wash it off in the morning.
Lemon juice
Lemon juice has citric acid and is loaded with Vitamin C. This helps exfoliate the skin and brighten it up, which is necessary is getting rid of bacteria and excess oil in the skin. Use some freshly squeezed lemon juice on a cotton ball and apply it on to the pimple. Do this a few times a day for best results.
Kaolin mud
And now for my favourite remedy! Again, I discovered this recently but I absolutely swear by it! I’ve read about how beneficial kaolin mud is for the skin but I couldn’t find it anywhere in Sri Lanka so imagine my joy when I bumped in to it at the Good Market! For a mere Rs.300, this stuff is gold!! Just last night I had a huge pimple on the side of my face (It was so big, my brother was teasing me saying I have a mountain on my face!) and a few random angry pimples on my cheeks. I mixed kaolin mud with some water and left it on overnight and I woke up to absolutely clear skin! No redness, no bumps, NOTHING! Kaoline clay (sometimes called China Clay and Kaolinite clay) purifies, vitalizes and boosts the cell renewal of the skin. It deeply cleans the pores and increases blood circulation. It’s safe to use and SO CHEAP! Mix it with a little apple cider vinegar and use it as a weekly face mask, if you suffer from oily skin.
Now let me make a little disclaimer; my skin is combination to dry skin. I don’t have severe acne issues. Just the random pimple that appears due to hormonal changes and bad eating habits, so if you have severe, stubborn acne, I recommend a visit to the doctor before trying anything at home as it could worsen your condition. Good luck!
