Chatting with Nicky De Silva...
This gorgeous individual, with a very positive outlook to life, juggles many roles. She is a model, fashion blogger and even runs her own online store which is soon about to have its own outlet. Nicky met us for a chat.
What’s an average day in your life like, as a fashion blogger and model?
Many little girls aspire to be a fashion model when they grow up. But the lives of a model or a blogger are often far less glamourous than they appear. I don’t know about other lifestyle bloggers and models but when it comes to me, I go to work every weekday and evening if am not tired I would go for a jog or catch up with my blog or my clothing line. I also love to cook and read so I find time to do all these things.
On days when I have a shoot, I wake up in the morning and have a big glass of water and do a little yoga to relax and stretch. I would definitely have a big meal and be ready for the big day. I love to listen to jazz or chilled out music when we are shooting.
You own and operate an online clothing store? Tell us more about this.
Yes, I have my own clothing line. Basically we sell female gypsy and classic accessories, and of course clothing too! Feel free to go to my Facebook page and check it out for the latest items of clothing and accessories.
What made you want to pursue a career in modelling?
Becoming a model is a dream of every girl and boy who craves fashion, designer clothes, glamour, being centre stage and travelling. Modelling is not always as easy as it looks on the shows and runways. You have to learn how to have a good attitude, work late hours and have a healthy diet plan as well as be fit and look good. You will have to travel around and work with different people all the time so it’s important that you know how to communicate well and be educated as you’re going to be the face of a brand or a show.
I simply do modelling and blogging because that just makes me happy and I don’t do it as a job. But I do love to keep myself well balanced in all areas like following a healthy diet, doing sports and working out. Being a model and having a career has its own rewards.
Biggest inspiration in the fashion world? Locally? Internationally?
I don’t actually have one. I would love to look at someone who looks like me, similar body types and sense of personal style as mine so I can look them up and be inspired. But a quick note of caution on this: when you look for inspiration in celebrity outfits or fashion, always add your own individual twist to their look. You cannot copy someone’s outfit piece to piece. Always be confident to wear your own version of their look.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about models these days?
One misconception about modelling is that all it requires is a pretty face and a slim figure.
Have you been the target of any crude or unjust rumors? How did you handle this?
Nothing yet, I hope there wont be any in the future either.
3 words to describe your personality?
Fashion lover, foodie and a kind person who loves to help people.
Where did you pursue your schooling?
I went to a government school in Sri Lanka called Ferguson High School up to Grade 8. Then I moved to England and went to Canons High School to finish my GCSE. After that I attended St. Mary’s College and Middleborough College in England to do my higher studies. I have also completed a military training course at a British army boot camp in Newcastle. Additionally, I've done sports at Teesside University.
What was your childhood like?
I had the most amazing childhood memories as far as I remember. I grew up with all my cousins together and we used to travel a lot and have so much fun. Unlike kids these days, we did so many amazing things as kids back then.
What are your future plans?
Well, right now I have an amazing life and I do what I love doing. I work at this architecture industry and I do modelling and blogging too. So in the future I hope to settle down and have a family.
