Natalya Gunaratne is not your average everyday singer; the way she performs on stage is simply breathtaking. Born and raised in Sri Lanka and 2nd eldest in a family of 4, Natalya was educated at her mothers’ alma mater, Bishops College and at the British School of Colombo where she completed the latter part of high school. Whilst in school, she was an all-round performer, where she was the soccer captain, a student of karate and a prefect and not forgetting what she loves to do the most, a singer! During school, Natalya had taken part in many plays including Macbeth and Greece. Having moved to Canada with her family a couple of years back, she is now a final year undergraduate at The University of Toronto studying neuroscience and psychology. She is a part of a band named The Skylines where they perform gigs during the weekends and she regards singing as her hobby.
Natalya was often heard screaming non-stop when she was a toddler so as to exercise her lungs for singing and her grandmother knew straight away that she would end up being a singer. Starting her musical career at the age of 4 with the Marian singers, she sang with them for 10 years where she gained a lot of experience in singing, dancing and performing. Playing the role Sandy in the musical Grease, which was put up by a cast from the British School of Colombo, it is one of her most favorite performances so far. In terms of singing, she had done her own show back in 2009, which was done for charity for an orphanage in Trincomalee for kids who have been orphaned by the Tsunami. Not only in her home country, she has performed at charity events like Music For Haiti, which is for doctors without borders back in Canada. A first for Natalya, her first music video “Pack It Up” was performed alongside The Sheriffs. Apart from her primary role models who are her parents, Natalya regards Beyoncé as her all-time favorite performer. Natalya’s performance on stage is impeccable and she will surely awe the crowds who gather at The Curve Bar, where she performs every Thursday and Saturday nights till the end of August.
