Sri Lankan designer Charini Suriyage launched her much awaited Autumn/Winter 2012 luxury eco‐lingerie collection at London Fashion Week in February, 2012.
Making her debut last year at the same event where her eco‐lingerie collection was lauded for its design and construction, Charini launched two entirely unique ranges this year around; a Bridal Range and Range X. Charini’s concept for both ranges was inspired by her ‘no-waste’ policy, where up-cycled elastics became the basic element of her collection. Interleaved with hand woven pure silks, lace and luxurious satin sourced from artisan communities across Sri Lanka with the highest level of commitment to ethical standards, both ranges remain true to the philosophy at the heart of the label; celebrating the perfect combination of luxury wellbeing and ethical fashion.
The ‘Marry Me Range’ consists of ivory shaded silhouettes with intricate lace, satin and elastic details rounding up the lingerie with sheer elegance. The luxury up‐cycled fabrics used in the pieces accentuate a softer, feminine nature, yet never undermining the seductress in a woman.
The ‘Range X’ on the other hand, exuberates a much bolder look in black and bronze, unleashing the daring spirit of a woman with a touch of panache. The lace, faux leather fabric along with intricate elastic detailing offers the perfect balance between femininity and sensual empowerment. Both ranges, despite the differences in feel and appearance, portray the sophisticated woman in control of herself, epitomising the woman who endorses ‘Charini’. The elastic detailing adds support along the natural female contour, highlighting the curves and movement of the body.
All pieces of the label adapt to ‘timeless’ designs and lasting styles encouraged by a slow fashion movement by Charini, rather than focusing on seasonal trends. Questioning the contemporary methods of lingerie manufacturing, Charini aspires to revive traditional lingerie manufacturing processes, using a unique manufacturing process that results in a minimum number of components, reducing the Carbon footprint left by the product. She refrains from using metal or any harmful dying in her products, only utilizing recycled plastic to minimize the impact on the environment.
