The Style Files: Is Orange The New Black?

Netflix would like you to believe that (for those of you who haven’t heard of/watched series, you should!)No it’s not, but tangerine might be headed in that direction! This colour was de riguer on the A/W14 ramps at Narciso Rodriguez,  Preen, Giles Deacon, Alberta Feretti and Zac Posen.

Not a colour for the faint hearted or those on a first date ( as it can be a terrifying tone especially if not worn properly!!!). If you don’t fall into either category then tangerine is spot on if you’re interested in keeping abreast of international seasonal trends.It has the confidence of red with the sharp acid of a yellow, more gutsy than a flouro shade and because it’s one of natures most violent colours it has sufficient appeal to our inner savage.

It’s always been a fashion pack staple, a go to summer colour throughout the years and to illustrate its endurance I’ve picked celebs sporting the shade from 2012 to 2014. If you don’t want to do all  tangerine you can tame it and temper the shade with a contrasting rich colour. A dash of hot-pink, a tinge of burnished gold, elegant navy, or a hint of turquoise all work well.

If you’re not really feeling the colour and the look is too bold for clothing, introduce tangerine as a lush accent via bags, shoes, lipstick or nails. you can still be on trend without committing to it completely.

Usually it’s the red lip that women can’t live without, but if the SS/14 runways were any indication, the orange/ tangerine lip is poised to be the hottest, go-to hue on every “it” girl’s pout.  Wearing the hue on your nails will give you an in the know cool edge. Whether worn in electric, attention-grabbing traffic cone tangerine for a fluorescent neon pop or muted and matte or even glossy  you can get a taste of the trend. The uniqueness of this colour is that it ranges from sophisticated to lively and fun.

Tangerine is a colour that lifts the spirits and could be the perfect antidote to the overcast gloomy skies (which I love) we’re experiencing now.
