Finding the right foundation for your skin is as important! The foundation is more often than not the canvas of any beautiful woman who wishes to paint or portray a vivid picture of herself to the outside world. A smooth and flawless foundation is the base to highlighting beautiful eyes, rosy cheeks or a sultry pout. Coverage comes in sheer, medium and full depending on your skin tone and what you want to achieve.
In this special feature of finding the right foundation for you, SKIN DEEP partners with Niki Samtani from The Parfumerie and reveals the basics of finding the perfect foundation. Find out how best to conceal flaws and achieve the most natural coverage we all envy on supermodels.
STEP ONE
Assess what you need – depending on skin tone, condition and shade your requirement will be as individual as you. If you have many scars or blotches, full coverage will be your main desire; if you have generally good skin, then you will require a light natural base to hold makeup; alternatively if you have very oily shiny skin, you’ll need a foundation that gives you a matt finish.
STEP TWO
Get a professional opinion – once you figure out what you want, visit a reputed Beauty Store (such as The Parfumerie) who will be able to guide you through to finding the right foundation. A professional inspection of your skin tone will make things easier.
STEP THREE
Making the right choices - there are many reputed brands you could choose from however opt for a brand that has concentrated in Asian skin. Brands such as Givenchy, MAC, Bobbi Brown and Lakme consider the Asian woman when producing their beauty lines. Remember that a great foundation is an investment that will last and shouldn’t be compromised on for price and convenience. The results of neglecting this will show where you can never hide it!
STEP FOUR
The search begins – finding the right foundation shouldn’t be DIY, always have a professional Beauty expert on hand to help you. When finding the right shade – strive to achieve the most natural shade closest to your skin and not a shade darker or lighter to your natural skin tone. Sometimes two shades of foundation can blend in to achieve the perfect shade for you. However let the beauty experts suggest the right combination, if the need arises.
STEP FIVE
Application & lighting – application should be on to the crook of your neck (the space in between your jaw line and the nape of your neck). Blend the foundation in a downward motion and inspect the color under yellow light or in natural sunlight. Applying foundation in white light will expose the slightest of your flaws, however this lighting isn’t recommended for natural coverage. Once you’ve made your decision, make not to apply foundation well all over your face and not only on the T zone of your face. Application can be with a sponge, your fingers or even a puff depending on the type of foundation you finally choose.
STEP SIX
Once you’ve applied your foundation (on your face, ear lobes, neck, décolletage and your back depending on how revealing your outfit is), make sure to use a pressed powder lightly all over your face and neck (right up to your décolletage) to set in the foundation and prepare for the makeup to last longer on your skin.
Other helpful tips
· Always cleanse your face - apply moisturizer and primer before applying the right foundation
· Make sure you have a large mirror and yellow light for application at home.
· Ensure your sponge or fingers are clean before using them for application
· Extreme heat can melt your foundation and make it watery – so try storing it in a cool dry place. If the foundation changes form, shake bottle and it will return to its original blend.
· If you feel you’ve applied too much foundation – dab your skin lightly with a tissue to remove the excess. Gently dab to remove excesses - don’t rub off as this can disrupt the original evened out application.
· All makeup products have a shelf life and should be discarded. A good foundation can be used for up to a maximum of a year and a half (two would be stretching it).
