Popular film actress, producer turned politician Geetha Kumarasinghe has organised a significant event to mark International Women’s Day on March 8 at Benthara, especially focusing on the beauty scene.
“Premasiri Hewawasam, Thusitha Bopage and Samantha Fernando will showcase the art of bridal dressing during the event that will benefit women from the Galle District especially Benthara who wish to make their lives beautiful in this beauty trade,” Geetha Kumarasinghe told Impulse.
Why did you organize such an event?
“Today the passion for beauty culture is on the rise and all want to look beautiful. I was the first film actress who took up beauty culture as a profession. I studied the subject in France and England and opened up Salon Geetha. I paved the way for most other actresses to follow suit,” she said.
‘We have organized several contests including bridal dressing in this glamorous show. It will be an ideal opportunity for participants to showcase their talents.”
How satisfying is the role you play in politics now?
“I have achieved almost everything in cinema. I entered politics not to gain anything from it but with the pure intention of serving the people. I represent an electorate which has not elected an MP in 20 years. That’s a challenge. Of some 94 000 voters in the electorate I got 36,000 votes in my first attempt.
But there are elements who try to create problems for me in politics. I am a woman who can’t be squashed so easily. The people of this electorate were once my fans. Today I gladly serve them and move with them sharing their joy and sorrow.
I am lucky in that sense and the people in Benthara know that I did not dump them just because I could not go to Parliament,” said Geetha Kumarasinghe who will be making a comeback to films this year with ‘Siri Dalada Gamanaya’.
