Erandi regularly visits her grandparents in Sri Lanka everytime she comes down from Keilor, Melbourne, but her visits are extraordinary. Fourteen year old Erandi Banneyake marks each visit by the recording of a song! Her third single, ‘Moving on Up’ is a song about girl power and independence moved up into the Yes FM’s Home Grown Top 15 recently.

The Overnewton College student teamed up with local rapper Krishan Maheson to write and perform the song. Her Facebook page has also become quite the hit, bagging over 2000 likes in no more than a few weeks’ time.

She speaks to us on Young Life today:

Have you always wanted to sing? Tell us about your passion.

I enjoy singing.  Ever since I was younger I was into music.  I used to sing around with my toy microphone when I was younger. Singing is my hobby.

I recorded my very first song “Island Girl” when I was nine years old. It’s about a Sri Lankan living in overseas. I then recorded my second song “Children of the Nation” which is a trilingual song (sung in Sinhala, Tamil and English) when I was 11.

Last year in December I produced my third song “Moving On Up” which is a young teen pop song about girl power and growing up.  I have successfully passed four levels of Rockschool and will soon be doing level five of it.

There are eight levels altogether and I am hoping to complete all eight levels. Rockschool is a music examination process from the UK.

What are your other interests?

Some of my other interests include playing the piano. I love playing the piano and have completed level four of the examination process. I often get sheet music off the internet to my favourite songs and in my spare time I play to them. I also enjoy doing sports. I play Tennis out of school which I really relish.

Soon I will be getting into competitions. I also love taking my Cocker Spaniel puppy on walks which we both enjoy. I believe it

’s a great way to stay fit and my puppy loves his walks so it’s like a treat for him.

I do swimming and I find that it’s a great way to cool down and get some exercise after a busy day at school. I am really into my studies and am currently focusing on my VCE which is the University Entrance Exam in Victoria.

Who is your inspiration? What motivates you?

Musically I enjoy positive people. I have been inspiration by talented Sri Lankan artist such as Krishan aiya and Dinesh aiya.  Also western artists like Madonna, Beyoncé and Rihanna. I am motivated by getting to the end of something or completing it. Whether it is producing a song or doing my homework. I get really satisfied once I finish something.

What are your plans for the near future?

I am hoping to record my next single when I come down to Sri Lanka next year.   I’m already thinking of the theme for my song, but I am keeping it as a secret. I will be starting a new school next year.  I am really looking forward to it. I also can’t wait to make some new friends.
