Review: The Electric Peacock Festival

Last weekend (particularly Saturday) was packed with so many events that a few people were clueless as to which one to attend, but a majority who had good taste had no issues picking where to go; even though a little out of the way, The Waters Edge in Battaramulla hosted the Electric Peacock Festival 2013.

The festival suffered a setback on the day of the show when the organizers announced that supporting headliner act Aluna George was unable to perform that night, but with the headliner being award winning British Artiste Tinie Tempah, the hype up to the festival was nothing but spectacular and people were still looking forward to a great concert.

On the plus side, many people were keen to check out the Durex Love Guru at his makeshift ashram and those who visited him were given valuable love advice and presented with flower garlands and plenty of toffees.

Following a few local DJs who took to the stage later on into the night, the crowd showed quite a lot of interest to local beat boxer Julius Mitchell’s performance as it was quite unique; for those who hadn’t seen him perform before it was quite the jaw dropping experience.

Next, the Naadro Drummers had the audience tapping their feet and bobbing their heads to a short but fantastic set. This was followed by the first international act of the evening 'The New Young Pony Club' a British electronic music band who played a number of their tunes from the band’s two albums.

The audience was getting restless and the shouts for Tinie Tempah began to grow even through the performance of the New Young Pony Club. When Tempah finally got on stage, the place was set alive with the crowd having saved all their energy to party to hits such as ‘Earthquake’, ‘Written in the Stars’ and ‘Pass out.’

A true performer has the ability to keep a crowd going throughout his or her entire set and that is exactly what Tinie Tempah did from the get-go. The crowd was thoroughly entertained.

His performance was followed by Sri Lanka’s own Asvajit and DJ Muku who are solid entertainers in their own right; unfortunately though, some of the crowd had already begun to file out of the venue.

On the negative side, was the beverages/food stalls which seemed to annoy most festival goers as the simple task of getting a beverage or bottle of water was too complicated due to a coupon system.

Perhaps this is something that organisers can look in to and rectify in the next festival.

Look at these bloody Sri Lankan girls... They are one day future mothers whose children will run the future of the country. Very irresponsible kids.

  2. Goni Billa says:

Thaminie Sellahewa. Dont be a prude. This is the 21st century and young people are expected and allowed to have fun. Whats wrong with you

  3. nicky karunarathna says:

What are you talking this 21st century digital age. Even kissing is digital these days. These girls are sooooo beautiful and they are going with the wind. Lets have party party and nothing but party with fun!

  4. leena says:

Dear Thaminie, did you never had the chance to go for a rave when you were young ? I certainly did and my kids turned out fine ! Much better than most kids, so don't be judging people by the standards you don't understand !

  5. Nimal Perera says:

thamini sellahewa what's irresponsible is your narrow minded, prudish views on how kids should be. what exactly have they done that you think is irresponsible? hopefully they wont ever become prudes like you.

  6. manpei says:

What have they done that's irresponsible? Is going to a concert irresponsible.

  7. Dammika says:

Women are being raped .... who tempt the males mind to react (I mean not all males). why half opened .... why not go full naked if these people really want to reveal their bodies.

  8. vérité says:

Sellahewa : You narrow minded twerp, Creep into the cave you emerged from.

  9. honnêteté says:

It wonderful to see young people in Sri Lanka getting a chance to enjoy themselves. Years ago youngsters were starved of entertainment in Sri Lanka . It looks like its changing fast. Great for everyone.

  10. Dinesh says:

As if the current leaders of the country are doing a good job even if there weren't any raves 10-30 years back,

  11. Goni Billa says:

Dammika yakko, If men cannot control their desires. Is that the fault of the ladies? What do you mean by tempt? In a free society an individual has a right to dress to please themselves as long as it is not vulgar. A girl in a pair of shorts is very appropriate at a Rave or concert. You have a filthy mind, that is you problem.

  12. honnêteté says:

Dammika - You are a very [mentally] sick individual, the sooner you seek help the better for humanity. Your ugly comment says it all. Sick, Sick. individual.

  13. Rol says:

Their mothers must be so proud seeing

  14. Suriya says:

Well, SL is a third world under developed country. With the cost of living so high and povery everywhere, these concrts are only for a few rich people in Colombo while everywhere else there is starvation and homelessness

  15. honnêteté says:

Rol, You sound like another narrow minded twerp, sick in the mind. Creep back into the cave you emerged from. Your comment here is disgusting.

  16. Nethmi Fernando says:

The electric peacock festival was the bomb! :) I don't know about you guys but I mostly enjoyed Julius Mitchell's performance as it was breathtaking;) Literally.
And Tinie Tempah was awesome even though he was 'casually' late, the performance was worth it:) xx

  17. Gon Aliya says:

Suriya - your assumption is incorrect. Its the so called rich people who spend their money that benefits everyone eles. If the rich hoard their money then no one would enjoy their money . This in economics is called the 'trickle down effect". By the rich attending these events many others like the organizers, musicians, trinket sellers, food vendors, photographers and a host of others benefit from it. So do not begrudge the rich for having attained that status. Maybe if you too work hard like an
