DANCEWORLD presents ‘A Jazzin’ Christmas’
With just days left to go for the big day, the director and students of Danceworld are capturing to the very core, the essence of the word ‘excitement’! Be enthralled as they unleash an array of finesse, doled out into modern, contemporary, lyrical and jazz dance genres.
Thursday 20th and Friday 21st are the days; Lionel Wendt is where you can catch all the action.
Sureka Buell, Director of Danceworld explains the concept, a first when it comes to a Christmas theme, as “fun, funky, sensitive, psychedelic and mysterious.”
Following four successful productions of JAZZAMATAZZ I & II, JAZZIN Ultimate Dance - Daringly Different and JAAZIN’ - Across the Floor, this time around the first half of the show will feature excerpts of the Nutcracker Ballet - ‘All Jazzed Up.’ The production of the classic Christmas favourite The NUTCRACKER has been reworked to Tchaikovsky’s musical score which has been re-orchestrated in the styles of jazz, ballet and lyrical to accompany the contemporary and innovative choreography.
The second half of the show - “Christmas Magic” - will be a grand mix of dance genres, topped with loads of hard core energy performed to popular Christmas songs. After previous productions where Danceworld has ‘dared to be different’ , this year the school plans to bring you a mix of dance genres inspired by popular Christmas songs such as Sleigh Ride, All I Want For Christmas, O Holy Night and Jingle Bell Rock to name a few.
During a previous interview, Sureka stressed, “My dancers’ boundless energy, enthusiasm and determination have been my true inspiration and I’m sure their hard work will enthral the audience as they perform.”
Being at a rehearsal leaves you in a simple brainwave: the very spectacle of the dancers performing is invigorating. Here are snippets of what some of the dancers, spanning across five to nineteen had to say about the school, rehearsals and their passion for dancing.
“I think it is fun and I’m happy coming for the classes.” – Amisha de Alwis, 9
“Being here is awesome and I’m enjoying it” – Reanna, 10
“Simpler Things is my favourite item. All this is not very hard, but it’s not really easy either for anyone to pull off!” – Shehanthi, 12
“I’m excited. The rehearsals are fun and we meet lots of people.” – Duleni, 12
“I have been dancing for the past six years. Really enjoy the rehearsals. We’re given an opportunity to give our own ideas and it’s a good learning experience. Few seniors teach as well. We are highly enjoying all of it, especially the diversity in this place.” – Kimaya de Silva, 18
“It’s a whole new experience this time around. We have a lot of dancers for a change, and casting everyone in is tricky. Casting and getting everything gelled together is challenging. It’s not stressful though. This is a new experience for everyone here, including me. It’s going to be a superb show, with lots of surprises and amazing things for the audience.” – Deshana de Alwis, 19
Join Danceworld and be part of the exquisite evening. The proceeds of this years’ show will be donated to the Music Project Sri Lanka - a project focusing on building links between two deprived farming communities, using music as the ‘link language’.
