Inspired by the tremendous following of live concerts held in Sri Lanka and the overwhelming thirst for local talent, DIVAS “LIVE” will bring together five amazingly talented young female artistes to share one stage in a single evening on 10 March 2012.
The artistes performing on the nights are as follows:
Niamh Evans
Niamh has loved the music since she was a child and now at 14 years old, she is a ‘recognised’ singer, guitarist and a somewhat reluctant pianist. Trained by Sureka Amerasinghe in Colombo, Niamh had an early introduction to jazz. For the past four years she has also studied under the guidance of Denham Pereira, Director of music ‘Voice of Praise’ choir, St Andrew’s Church and more recently came under the influence of ‘Music Matters’ and Maxie Rosario.
Niamh has of late developed a ‘Joan Baez meets Adele’ style as a solo singer guitarist. Her short ‘career’ has included appearances at CR&FC Sunday Jazz, Hilton Hotel (Colombo), Cinnamon Lakeside (Colombo), Barefoot Gallery (Colombo), charity concert at The British School, and gigs on resort islands in Maldives. She is influenced by a modern genre of gifted singers from Adele, Amy Winehouse to Michael Buble as well as the all time greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gorme, Chaka Khan and Chet Baker.
Thilinee Silva
Thilinee Silva, whose colourful personality and rich vocals have enlivened the genres of pop, rock and soul these past few years, is a popular young artiste who’s rapidly making a name for herself in the local music scene. A past pupil of Good Shepherd’s Convent, Thilinee was voted through to the Top 12 of the YES SUPER STAR Competition 2009 and has gained national recognition with her soulful song “Something Right”, which was subsequently included in the YES SUPER STAR album released later that year. Thilinee has graced the stages of many national events, including the MJ Tribute Concerts of 2010 & 2011, and is a popular favourite whose unforgettable voice and memorable tones are sought after by music loving audiences throughout Colombo.
Schamali Jayaratne
Schamali first discovered that she could sing at the tender age of ten, when she was asked to join the school choir at Ladies’ College under the guidance of Ms. Sureka Amerasinghe. As a school girl, she took part in numerous inter-house solo singing competitions. Participating in those competitions gave her the opportunity to be trained by esteemed singers such as Rohan de Lanerolle (at workshops held prior to the competitions). Currently she is being trained by Ms. Peshali Yapa and is a chorister of her choir-Coro CantAmici.
Shamista De Silva
At just 19 years of age, Shamistha is no stranger to the spotlight; already making waves in the music industry with her outstanding performances, both at home and internationally, as an award winning cellist as well as an exceptional singer. In the past she has collaborated with several renowned artistes and bands such as The Rebels, Five Minutes Apart, Harsha Makalanda, Bathiya and Santush and has also performed with the Merry An Singers in Chennai. In 2009, Shamistha flaunted her amazing vocals by singing Alto in the Master Work “Verdi’s Requiem", conducted by the internationally renowned conductor Gregory Rose, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka.
She has made the most of her entire life; being a dedicated member of her school choir for eight years and a conductor and leader since 2006, a former member of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Sri Lanka since 2001 - heading the Cello Section since 2007, a frequent performer at the Jazz Unlimited at CR & FC and Jazz Sundays at Loon Tao, (to name a few), all while managing straight As!
Shamistha also sings lead vocals for 'String Theory', a pop band which launched over two years ago and is a member of a professional string quartet, which performs once a week at one of Colombo’s most prestigious hotels.
The show will take place on 10 March at the Silk Lounge. Divas Live is a Channel Media Production.
