Life's motto: When you believe you can; you can!!!
Music genre: Fusion, Blues, Soul, R&B, Sri Lankan pop.
Education in short: Bachelor of Arts and learning every day that life is too short to stop learning.
Armed with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Devashrie is definitely one of Sri Lanka’s newest singing sensations. She’s seen on the TV screen as she is one of the hosts for one of Sri Lanka’s popular reality singing star competitions.
Here is Devashrie, up-close and personal with Life Online!
Devashrie, there was a time when we saw Sri Lankan singers on stage with a mike in hand. But now we see new age singers dancing, preforming and entertaining the crowd in every way they can. What’s your view on this transformation?
It’s good because a singer/performer needs to relate to the audience through the changing times. That being said, I think most artistes of different eras have entertained in the best way that connected to those audiences. And dance and positive energy will always be a huge part of what makes music tick.
Do you think a successful singer should know how to dance and perform in addition to being able to sing?
Not necessarily.. There are fantastic singers who continue to captivate their audiences just by the strength of their voice/personality. A good example these days for this is Adele. But yes, having a great sense of rhythm and the talent to dance can be an added bonus! However main thing is to have a charismatic personality to complement any style of music!
As a new age singer what is your ultimate goal?
To enjoy what I do and share the magic of music and arts. This medium can do wonders and if I could create something unforgettable and empowering in the minds of my listeners I’ll be a happy girl
What was the turning point of your life in becoming a singer?
The day I got a standing ovation at my first public solo performance at Disneyland Paris... I was part of a music troupe from school when I was 12.
How does your year plan look like for 2013?
2013 is looking busy. I’m planning to release my second single in Sinhala and with a few other songs lined up to put up a pocket concert later in the year.. I will continue to sing/perform in both English and Sinhala with MAFF (Mahesh Denipitiya and Friends in Fusion) the band I’ve been a part of for more than four years now.. And also continue my solo spots at events and shows. I will also like always make time to be part of social transformation causes, this is something I believe in very much.
In the meantime my hosting work with Sirasa Super Star Season 5 will continue on taking much of this year! While I also host a series of Google+ hangouts called 'Ripples of Music.'
'Serenade' a beautiful bunch of people with the heart for music, a voice troupe I’m directing, will be singing at special events and also taking time out to use music as a tool to heal and reconcile.
In Sri Lanka, the opportunities are quite limited for artists of every sphere. In the far East and the West , if one has a talent it could be put to very good use commercially and they could earn a good living doing that.
#nicky karunaratne as usual airs his utter ignorance. These pictures of Devashrie has nothing to do with muscles nor is the 'two syllable' name : Deva-shrie a tongue twister. Educate yourself Nicky.
