With the title ‘Becoming 2012’ this year, CAB runs 15 through 19 February 2012 mainly at the National Art Gallery, JDA Perera Gallery and Park Street Mews.
CAB was conceived in a nation and at a time when its people were only ‘Imagining Peace’ and has since grown to ‘Becoming’ - capturing in its festival, the aspirations of a people longing for peace, representation and recognition to replace its images of despair seen worldwide.
CAB was created to showcase Sri Lankan artists. It is a remarkable project that has taken a varied and expert team two years to organise. It is very much a Sri Lankan event inspired by Sri Lankan artists and guided by a Steering Group that includes senior members of the Sri Lankan visual arts community led by Co-Founder Jagath Weerasinghe
A key element of the Biennale is its internationalism. To successfully promote Sri Lankan art and artists outside Sri Lanka, the Biennale has created a programme that places the artists in an international context. Co- founder Annoushka Hempel said. "The first Biennale showed our international visitors the range and quality of Sri Lankan artists work and gave us the confidence in this edition to place them in an international context. By working with international curators we have been able to access artists from the region and worldwide. Their presence has attracted international press and visitors. There is a developing sense of community and common purpose of expansive excellence between the national and international artists”.
