A chat with Dhanushka

CHERIE, is a handcrafted statement jewellery collection made and braided from different textiles and techniques founded by Dhanushka Jayawardene. Each piece is a one of a kind and truly a labour of love. Cherie was launched in 2014 and operates as an online shop so far.

“At the moment Cherie is targeted at the international market and my acquaintances are frequent customers. I have also worked in the PR industry for over 7 years and started paper crafting as a stress buster and got addicted to the minute details of a design. With a passion for fashion and elegant designs, I wanted to start my own venture and hence created Cherie for all the darlings,” Dhanushka says.

What is your creative style when it comes to your jewellery line CHERIE?

Colourful, casual and chic. I love color and texture and am always trying new combinations to create one of a kind pieces. Which normally takes more than 24 hrs of concentration and finesse is something I really believe in and try to maintain as at the end of the day a high quality - effort product would be an ideal outcome in my eyes as well as for the customer.

What type of materials do you use?

I like to experiment with different types of fabric materials, so far I have used spandex, cotton, silk, felt for my jewellery as well as gold plated chains and different types of beads to add a little bit of bling and I'm hoping to incorporate denim and lace materials for my next collections.

How would you describe your work and your position within the crafts world?

Fabric jewellery is something which I started recently so I would describe my work and position in the jewellery craft world as an "amateur" but I have been into paper crafts for some time. I am still experimenting with all the opportunities I get.

Who is your clientele?

My designs are for anyone with a creative and unique sense of style. Depending on the occasion, dress and mood, anyone can pick and request for a unique design. I also create "fabric only" designs for young moms who would love to wear a dash of color without being concerned about sharp edges or babies chewing their jewellery.

Your most inspirational jewellery designer, one international and local?

There are many international textile jewellery designers I admire and locally I love Ayne Nalir's work.

What's next for the brand CHERIE?

I will be launching a beachwear collection partnering with one of the resort hotel chains in Sri Lanka targeting the tourism market.
