HSBC Colombo Fashion Week dazzles with high fashion
The main shows of the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week 2014 got off to a rocking start tonight (6 February) with a fantastic line up of designers showcasing their collections. Kicking off Day 1, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada (Spain), Middle Finger (Sri Lanka), Krishna Mehta (India), Radhika (Sri Lanka), MAUS (Sri Lanka), Indi (Sri Lanka), Aphrodite’s Myrtle (Sri Lanka), Dimuthu Sahabandu (Sri Lanka) and Ramona Oshini (Sri Lanka) wowed the audience with their collections.
Agatha Ruiz de la Prada
Returning to Sri Lanka one of her many fashion week appearances, this time Agatha is represented by her daughter Cosmia who is also the face of the brand. She showed a collection of quirky outfits in conical shapes and bright colours complemented by multi coloured high heeled wedges.
“I am representing my mother this time at CFW and it has been a great show.”
Middle Finger
Fahad presented a collection of denim jeans and shirts. Exploiting his love for denim his collection took denim to a new level.
“Working with denim is not easy, but I have a great team of designers that support me.”
Krishna Mehta
Krishna Mehta, a textile designer and the creative director of the brand “Krishna Mehta” established since 1988, uses her heritage as the starting and ending point for all her design inspirations, by maintaining a fine balance between the sensitivities of the diverse cultures, re-living the classic design fundamentals of her country – India.
“My collection is based on lots of colourful tie and dye and shiburi work with block printing.”
Radhika
Designing for the House of Inspiration label, Radhika drew her inspiration for her collection from the traditional Sinhala design motif the Hansa Putuwa.
“My collection is inspired from the Sinhala design motif of the Hansa Putuwa. I love using traditional designs in my collections.”
MAUS
Using monochrome colours of black and white Annika’s maiden collection at Colombo Fashion Week offered simple but stylish silhouettes.
“My collection contains wardrobe essentials, clean and minimal lines in black and white.”
Indi
Inspired by elements of the traditional Sri lankan sesath, Indi has created this collection using traditional Sri Lankan handcrafts which are 100% handmade.
"My collection is called Pride and Romance and it features a lot of Beerale lace, Satin and wooden accessories."
Designing for 'Melache' this young design team is passionate about fashion. Using a colour palette of rich reds, crimsons and greens with luxurious trims, their take on evening wear was interesting and appealing.
"Our collection is for the more sophisticated women who like contemporary fashion and it's called Contempo Abbey inspired by the Romanesque architecture and art deco of Roman Catholic churches."
Dimuthu Sahabandu
A seasoned designer at Colombo Fashion Week Dimuthu’s collection was a showstopper with fabulous evening dresses which gave a real dramatic feel to the whole show.
“The inspiration for my collection was based on the last Queen of Senkadagala”
Ramona Oshini
Ending Day One with a show stopping collection Ramona Oshini drew her inspiration from the British Raj.
“My collection features long flowy silhouettes which flatter the female form.”
