With vast experience in dressing brides she’s an iconic figure in hair and beauty so we spoke to her about the various beauty routines and rituals a to-be bride undergoes after her engagement.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
I have been in the business of hair and beauty for over 35 years and run the Ramani Fernando chain of Hair and Beauty Salons in Sri Lanka. In addition to my involvement in hair and beauty, the dressing of brides has been of special interest to me.
What’s the first and foremost beauty ritual a bride should do after getting engaged?
Preparing for her wedding day must start almost immediately by taking care of her skin, toning the body and getting into good shape. At the same time start on facials and cleanups in consultation with your beautician.
In your opinion, what should a bride represent on her wedding day?
She should be herself. Of course, as it is going to be one of the most important days in her life she should make preparations to look her best on that day.
What’s a ‘clean up’? And how important is it for a bride to do it before her wedding?
A cleanup is a facial without a massage. If you have acne or oily skin one should always avoid massaging your face. This routine of clean ups could start ideally about six months before, and done approximately once a month.
What other beauty rituals should a bride do?
I wouldn't call it rituals but deciding on the date and venue for the wedding is of primary importance and then booking your hairdresser, dressmaker, designer, florist and may be your event manager should be done without delay.
Can you give us a timeline of beauty rituals a bride has to do before her big day?
Clean up ideally to start 6 months before approximately once a month, discuss hair styles with hairdresser about 2 months before and if necessary have your trials, manicure and pedicure a day or two before the wedding.
How important is it for the bride to test out the make up and her look before the wedding?
Most brides to satisfy themselves of what is best, do a hair and makeup trial about 2/3 weeks before with the selected hairdresser / beautician.
What is the routine for a bride on her wedding day when getting ready?
Keep around 3-4 hours for dressing time, photographers require about another 2-3 hours.
What should a bride do or keep in handy to keep her looking fresh throughout the long and busy day?
Usually a touch up is necessary after the church service or before the Poruwa, because brides usually start dressing very early for the wedding. As a necessity, the professional bridal dresser should be kept in readiness.
What beauty rituals should a bride AVOID doing before the wedding?
Experimenting on various haircuts!
What should a bride AVOID doing on her wedding day?
Breaking rest and taking on too much responsibility in organizing wedding herself. She should leave it to the professionals and be completely relaxed.
