Fashion is an ever evolving fast paced industry and being abreast of it, can sometimes be tedious, for most. But this is not so, for this week's personality.
Meet the face behind www.foxinheels.com - Asanki Fernando.
Asanki works in the hospitality industry but she is an ardent fashionista, and she offers her advice (with her own twist) on her blog spot ‘foxinheels’ and through her Instagram page asanki _foxy.
A Lankan now residing in Melbourne Australia, Asanki’s dream is to open up her own fashion business, one day.
I caught up with her for a chat.
Full name: Asanki Fernando
Nickname: Foxy, Sanki,
Education in brief: Masters in Tourism & Event Management at the University of Victoria, Bachelor of Business (Marketing & International trade), Edexcel A/L & O/L at Asian International School (Colombo)
Life’s motto: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”
― Oscar Wilde
Eye colour: Dark brown
Height: 5’5
Waist: 26
Regular diet: I try to eat healthy (lots of kale & fish ) and have regular balanced meals. I don’t really believe in starving myself.
Favourite colour: Jade
Favourite clothing: A pair of perfectly fitted ripped blue jeans, a white shirt and a classic LBD should be staples in every woman’s wardrobe.
What is your primary field of choice. Are you a model or…?
I am not a model, far from it actually. I just finished my Masters and I work in the hospitality industry full time (which is what I did my Masters in).
When did you move to Melbourne?
I moved to Malaysia in 2006 to attend university and after that I decided to transfer to Melbourne to finish off my degree. I was only meant to be in Melbourne for 3 years but when I got here I fell in love with the culture and the city and decided to stay back and do my Masters. Ever since that I’ve been living here and I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else. They don’t call Melbourne the most liveable city in the world for no reason.
Where do you get your lovely clothes from?
I am a self-proclaimed shopaholic. I spend most of my earnings buying clothes, shoes etc. But I also get some of my stuff from sponsors. In saying that I only take clothes that suit my style and taste from sponsors so I am picky with the sponsors I choose.
What do you do with clothes you’ve worn more than twice?
Since I am constantly buying new stuff and I get sick of them after wearing them once I do sell some of them. But I don’t part with the classics or timeless pieces and the clothes that I fall in love with.
You are surrounded by many fashionable people. How did that happen?
I have been in the social scene for a while now and because of that I get to attend many events that involve fashion and through attending those I have made a lot of connections and also I meet a lot of amazing and fashionable people through mutual friends.
Is this your livelihood or are you engaged in any other career?
This is not my career. This started off as a hobby because I love fashion and I love writing so I thought why not put those two interests together and start a blog and it kind of grew from there. I would love to be involved in the fashion industry full time but there is still a long way to go for that.
You are quiet a social bee. How does that work out for you with your current line of work?
Like I said I am involved in the social scene and I enjoy going out and meeting like minded people but I never let my social life or late nights affect my day time job. I try my best to prioritise and party responsibly I guess.
Any plans to come back to Sri Lanka?
I do miss Sri Lanka and it will always be home and it’s harder because I’ve still got family and friends living there which makes me miss Colombo more. I try to come home at least once a year so hopefully this Christmas.
Your thoughts on Sri Lankans and skimpy clothing?
I don't think there should be taboos in fashion and freedom to express is open to anyone who wishes to follow. I always make sure my images portray me. I guess some people might think they are too skimpy but you can’t always make everyone else happy. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion I guess. As long as you dress occasion appropriate I don’t see why it should bother anyone.
What are your future plans?
My dream is to be a stylist and to open up my own business which would involve lots of designer clothes and styling but unfortunately I can’t reveal any of those plans yet because they are still in their early stages and you know how competitive this industry is..
