With their many means of expressing the subtly of the human nature Shakespeare’s plays possess an unparalleled and striking attitude that sets them apart from many.
This year, fourteen and twelve leading girls’ and boys’ schools, respectively, took part in this dramatic extravaganza showcasing the talents of many young and budding actors and actresses.
From the semi-final rounds, four girls’ schools and five boys’ schools that performed exceptionally well were selected to battle it out during the finals : namely Bishop’s College Colombo performing Romeo & Juliet, Gateway, Kandy which performed The Winter’s Tale, Girl’s High School, Kandy and Ave Maria Convent, Negombo performing Midsummer Night’s Dream went through to the selected final four. St. Benedict’s College and Royal College, Colombo performing Romeo & Juliet, Trinity College, Kandy showcasing Julius Caesar, Maris Stella College, Negombo and D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo individually performing Midsummer Night’s Dream were selected under the boys’ category.
Ruhasha Dassanayake from Ave Maria Convent Negombo and Rashmi Dias from Bishop’s College gave prominent portrayals of Oberon from The Winter’s Tale and Lord Capulet from Romeo & Juliet while the eleven year old Andrea Fernando playing Puck managed to present a noteworthy performance as well.
From D.S. Senanayake College, Chalana Wijesuriye playing Oberon and Deshith Gamage from Royal College playing Mercutio displayed praiseworthy performances as well.
The semi-finals phase of the competition showcased hard work, dedication, teamwork and myriad talents in varying forms from our young, talented actors and actresses.
The finals will undoubtedly be a nail-biter for all those drama enthusiasts who could manage to get a glimpse of what these brilliant entertainers have to offer.
Finals of the Annual Inter-School Shakespeare Competition will be held on 5 and 6 October at the Bishop’s College Auditorium from 6pm onwards.
