The ‘railroad stripes’ is a fabric print which consists of vertical utilitarian lines which are closely placed together. This trend is youthful and fresh which makes any silhouette look elongated because of the vertical thin lines.
When using this trend on pants or slim fitted skirts, it is more attractive to wear blouses with contrasting stripes or look fierce with a colourful graphic print. And when using the railroad stripes on tops it is best to pair it with pants or skirts with a vibrant colour or print.
This vintage design was mostly used on denim, however the designers have customized the trend and such is used on material apart from denim making it more chic and elegant which was quite prominent during New York Fashion Week.
Joseph Altuzarra, an American designer showcased his work at New York Fashion Week by mixing masculinity with feminine attire by pairing structured jackets made from railroad striped cotton and tailored shirts creating a very sleek, polished and well tailored look.
Altuzarra’s designs were more appealing because of the combination of different material and designs which prevented the garments from looking too plain and casual with just railroad stripes. Also the use of stylish footwear especially the knee-high boots, or the gladiators in different shades of brown helped to make an equally dramatic statement.
Even with the hype about reviving an old trend, many are sceptical about this style since for some it looks like wearing farm work clothes regardless of how expensive they are. And it is tough for many to pull off the trend successfully due to the difficulty in matching the garments and accessories with this print. Furthermore in theory, they are supposed to look fresh and crisp. But in practice, the stripes usually end up looking juvenile and overpowering.
In view of the above, let us know whether you would dare to go onboard with this trend.
