With the boom in Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry, we see many stars rise and fall each day. Some stars who “were popular” a year ago have suddenly vanished into thin air. This happens because most of them are not focused or determined on a goal.
Many just make a very successful tele-drama debut or make a hit music single and never continue down the same line.

Today we meet Alanki, a beautiful lady who has managed to sustain her place in Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry due to her dedication and stability. She is a respected and talented individual in the industry with many stories to tell.

I met up for a chat…

Alanki , for nearly a decade you have been seen around in the industry. What is your secret of sustainability?

I was invited for commercials and advertisements from a very young age.. But it has been only about 6 years since I started acting. I guess my secret of sustainability in my career has been the fact that I was always selective in my work.. Sometimes people would take up acting offers just to make quick fame.. But I always chose from the heart. I would always get involved in a project only if I felt that I could do justice to my character. I believe in quality and not quantity in whatever I do, whether it be my studies, personal life or acting. I guess that is my secret!

Have you tried singing? Is there a career before you in singing?

I was invited to sing by several well-known and professional artistes (singers, musicians) but I never pursued it. I love music and appreciate good music but never felt a calling for singing.

When would you think of giving up acting?

I don’t know if I would say goodbye to acting. Maybe when I am a mother or if I get involved in professional work related to my law degree.. However, whatever I do, I might at least try to make one appearance in a project at least once a year just for my love for cinema and the arts. So there will never be a goodbye.. Hopefully! But if God has other plans for me, then I will!

Do you feel Sri Lanka fosters a good and well paid entertainment industry?

Well in comparison to other jobs in Sri Lanka, acting pays you much more. However in comparison to international acting, it is not high at all. So yes, it is low in comparison to the international acting industry.

When it comes to modelling we have seen you in few high profile shoots. Do you have a criteria when you go into modelling?

I don’t know if I consider myself as a model.. I don’t do ramp modelling.. Mostly it’s photo shoots or advertisement campaigns.. But I am very selective and always make sure I get into something of high standard. Eventually people will see you and recognise you according to the projects you have taken part in.

What would be your dream role and dream co-star , if you got invited to star in a Bollywood movie and why?

I don’t have a dream role. But I have always wanted to act in an arts movie. But if it’s Bollywood, it would be Shah Rukh or Aishwariya Rai. I think Aishwariya Rai is a woman with absolute grace, charm, beauty and intelligence.. as for Shah Rukh, he will always be a super star!

When do you think you can reveal prince charming to your fans?

Good question, but I will reveal prince charming when the time is right. It’s a bit uncomfortable to reveal personal information when you are in this industry as it can be used against you. But if I am pretty confident that I have found 'the one', then yes I will be very open about it. But to be honest, I am completely single now and who says you need a man?

  1. Wasantha says:

Sorry, but you should NOT wear minis. Pretty face though.

  2. jayasiri says:

I quite like her in a mini -skirt. She looks quite pretty with that on, than a saree. However, I would be very happy to see you focus on your legal career as you have a law degree. That beauty will come as an asset in any career you choose. BEST OF LUCK~ J

  3. Gemba says:

Washantha: Why should she not wear minis? Looks good to me. Alanki is an attractive young woman, if she is happy with her outfit, what does it matter to anyone else.

  4. Seriously says:

Now that's article I like to read, lady got some good points to be inspired, I like when she say's "who needs a man" very intelligent lady, I like reading this article. and she is absolutely correct not to mentioned even if she has a prince charming.
@Wasantha Seriously, so you just visited to this web page just to watch her photos and comment what she is wearing, thats all you got to say, please keep your hypocritical and vulgar ideas to yourself, she is a beautiful woman, she is independ

  5. Ikram really got problems says:

To Ikram, this dude really got problems, he stays in Sri Lanka and try change it to a Arab, you are a shame to Muslims and Alla, may Alla one day turn you into a woman. see how you like it

  6. Ikram says:

How dare she wear a mini? Does she think this is America or some morally bankrupt western country? There is no discipline in this country. The women are free to wear what they want and sleep with who they want. This would never happen in Arab countries.

  7. Chris says:

@Chris: why dont you go and live in arab country then. Btw why did you even read this article if you are so against women wearing skirts.

  8. Calistus Jayatilleke says:

Ikram: Of course, that's exactly the point - we are NOT living in a backward Arab country 3here women are supposed to cover up everything and be slaves. We live in a free country where both men and women have absolute freedom to wear what they like and be presentable. Only brain-washed fanatics use phrases such as ":morally bankrupt"

  9. Gemba says:

Ikram; Stop moralizing. Everyone knows what Arabs do as soon as they get to more liberal countries. They are the most backward countries in the world with a false 7th century mindset. I suppose you know nothing about child brides, female circumcision, women being the property of men, woman denied education. the marriage of first cousins to retain the wealth in the family, the list goes on. This is the inevitable result of primitive supernaturalist beliefs being given dominance over rational tho

  10. Hussain says:

Ikram: Another interesting thing about Arabs is in their tribal mindset in most Arab countries. Most of the Mullahs and Tribal elders are opposed to Western Ideas and schooling because that can change the thinking of the masses. they want people to live in the middle ages so they can practice all those brutal practices in their tribal councils (where the murder of Innocent women is justified), or giving a 12 or 9 years old girl to a 60 years old man in marriage and a rich man cant get prosec

  11. Hoona says:

Ikram: Answer me a simple question, If Arab countries are so wonderful, why are most of Arabs who could afford it flock to western democracies? And all arab asylum seekers do not go to any other arab country but try to creep into (morally bankrupt -yours not mine) western countries? Look at all the arab countries they are the most backward, primitive, wretched places on earth with the worst record on human rights. So how can you living in a liberal democracy even make such a asinine comment ?

  12. Priyanga says:

Kishani, well managed the interview and look so pretty than last week product , as you are charming lady you have selected words nicely to cope up the situation, I think your fans always love to see something good in nature because that's what they expect and that's where your fame rely on, have a good round trip. Good luck . Priyanga

  13. JJ says:

Ikram - either you are a non-muslim trying to provoke some racial comments here or u are an idiotic muslim who doesn't know that religion is a personal choice.. doesn't mean everyone needs to follow your belief.

  14. Ikram says:

How an DailyMirror publish these racist comments against Muslims and Arabs by these foreign agents? Who are these Hoona, Gemba and Hussain? How can DailyMirror publish their hate comments? It is because of Muslims that the Sri Lankan people have not lost their sense of morality. People here need to think before they type. All these people think wearing mini skirts and having boyfriends is the goal of life.

  15. Please says:

DM Please remove comments not related to this article, Please remove Ikram's comments, nothing related to the article

  16. Punchi Banda says:

Ikram it looks like that you cannot handle the truth. I see no comments made here against muslims or Arabs, The real problem here is that when someone speaks the truth, you say its racist. I see nothing racist in the comments here. Read them once again and if you think any are wrong then, say what you think is right without moaning.

  17. Shan says:

Hey whats wrong someone wearing a miniskirt. Its her liking. Hw can others pass moral judgement. If you do not like look the other side. I congratulate you. Do what is good for you. You are brave intelligent girl. I too ave a young daughter. She too wears miniskirts. So whats wrong. Im proud about our young sri lanka women. The present generation like to express themseleves than their predecessors. Ikram you have no right to critisize them just because you dont like it.

  18. Viraj says:

I fully agree with Wasanatha. Her legs are pretty bad. Only girls with beautiful legs should wear minis.

  19. Gemba says:

Viraj; Since when are your the purveyor of women's legs? Each human being is an individual

  20. vérité says:

Ikram, You are the one who brought in the Arab connection to this thread. When Gemba, Hoona

  21. Honestly says:

You all are idiots and wasting your time on this thread. The only reason I read it, is cause u all r hilarious. U guys are argueing about things that have nothing to do with this article. There are plently of other social platforms to state your nonsense. Pls go there.
