Five years ago Nicolas Ghesquiere put gladiators on the runway at Balenciaga and now we are looking at a resurgence of the controversial sandal next year.
The come back of these knee high gladiators were quite prominent on the runways of Alexander Wang, Acne, Altuzarra and Marios Schwab, all of whom had their own take on the footwear trend.
Alexander Wang went for the bold with chunky heels, whilst Altuzarra adopted the intricate gladiator in fine leather, Salvatore Ferragamo selected the tribal fierce croco style and Tom Ford opted for the gold metallic multi-strap.
This Roman-inspired style is usually found in flats, so it is an easy and comfortable choice for summer that can give your look an instant exotic feel and brings out more versatility.
Gladiators can be worn day or night, kept casual or dressed up. But in order to carry this style off you are required to be quite conscious of what you wear it with. A hi-low skirt is on trend and exudes this edgy, ethereal vibe, even pairing these sandals with a flowing maxi dress is subtle and sophisticated, and a longer hemlines will prevent choppiness; however, it is best to try out different ensembles until you find what fits your personal style.
Some gladiators are harder to pull off than others, since black leather straps can look more out of the novel 50 Shades of Grey, than trendy and chic. Thick straps are another tough one to carry off unless you have very thin legs, since it can end up making your feet and ankles look weighty by drawing attention to your legs.
It must be noted that knee high gladiators are only for the most confident of shoe buffs. If you try this look, do not try anything daring with the rest of your outfit. Keep the rest of your look simple, whether it is a solid coloured dress, shorts and a basic shirt or leggings and a long top. Do not try to pair them with other trends or bright loud prints. Women's gladiator sandals can make a look legendary, so make sure yours isn't a legendary fashion ‘Do not!’
