The Style Files : Jazz up your look for the Jazz and Blues Festival

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life," wrote Berthold Auerbach, the German author and poet (1812-1882). With Colombo all a buzz with the upcoming Jazz & Blues Festival on the February 7, I thought it a fitting time to write a piece on “festival fashion”!

Insouciant and carefree is the dress code for most music festivals, this one being no exception. It’s a day to night affair so lots of leggy looks, cropped tops, Kaftan style dresses, high waisted smart shorts  (try and steer clear of the denim hot-pant look it’s not that kind of festival), breezy maxi dresses, floppy hats and fabulous sunglasses.

A panama paired with a tribal print top is an easy throw-on option. Add a pair of ripped jeans  to show your fun side and sandals and you’re attired perfectly for the picnic style seating lounge in front of the stage. Or if you want the ultimate bohemian festival look, only a maxi dress will do. Choose a floaty number with spaghetti straps and top with an oversized sun hat and wedges. Breeze through to the champagne and oyster bar in whimsical broderie anglaise dress and tan accessories. If you’re in the Mercedes Benz VIP lounge dress the part!

Flowers in the hair are a throwback to 1967 Summer of Love Music Festival in San Francisco. Flowers symbolize innocence, the celebratory spirit of love and friendship and are always perfect music festival attire, just don’t go overboard, less is always more with this look. Since the music really will be centre stage, where better to look for inspiration than the musicians themselves? Find your favourite jazz musician and steal a bit of their style.

Always keep in mind that being comfortable is key to having a good time. You don’t want to be hot or messing around with your outfit while you’re trying to enjoy the experience.
