The Style Files : Back to School Fashion

Vogue (online) recently ran an article featuring school style from around the world with its cover of a beautiful picture of schoolgirls from Galle. “Blue ribbons flying from the ends of schoolgirls’ cascading plaits in Sri Lanka.” That married with most of my girlfriends being unable to meet for mid week cocktails because of the dreaded early morning school run got me thinking about two of the biggest school style trends that are ruling the runways.

Backpacks

Let your inner elementary school-self rejoice, backpacks are back! Just the word "backpack" may conjure up thoughts of teenage years and lugging around textbooks. However, for A/W15 designers re-imagined the grade-school staple and believe me these are not the same sort of backpack bags you once knew. They're now offered in a host of chic leathers, in exotic skins and colours that are sleek enough for work or a night out.

Karlie Kloss

Pleated Skirts

They’re so very back-to-school which makes them perfect for the A/W15 season and  thankfully, when they crop up in our wardrobes again now, there's no longer the fear of double maths to accompany them.

Selena Gomez

They've received an upgrade - in luxe leather, shimmer, sparkly sequins and those craving the defined silhouette of pleats, the season’s latest trend brings visual interest to both midi and mini hemlines rendered in box or knife varieties that sashays sexily around the knee as they go.

Solange Knowles

Dior, Valentino, Balmain, Hermes all did beautiful takes on the pleated skirt, swishy, tough, billowing, dressed up, dressed down. Who knew pleats could look quite so good?

Kate Hudson

The thing to note with the pleated skirt now though is where at school it blended into a background of predominantly white now it should be your focal piece that steals all of the outfit action. Wear it with something simple and uncluttered up top - a shirt or simple T-shirt. Be careful to keep the silhouette clean and don’t go overboard with it and of course be sure to leave the other current fashion fave backpacks right at home. Remember, you’re not actually going back to school.
