views 4406Colombo’s annual swimsuit mecca witnessed both local and international designers showcase their collections to a fashion savvy audience. Thanks to the vision of Ajai Vir Singh, Sri Lankan designers especially have been encouraged to launch their swim collections in the recent past and what better place to hold Asia’s first dedicated annual Swim Week than in Sri Lanka, a tropical paradise.
This year, Swim Week Colombo introduced their all new global positioning with their theme ‘Green Conscious and Earth Sensitive’ and in lieu of this, all designers taking the ramp had to ensure their collections were in par with this new sustainable fashion theme.
Kicking off Swim Week, 8 designers took to the ramp showcasing a multitude of swim, resort and active wear featuring clean cuts, flirty tassels and sleek silhouettes while staying true to the season’s theme of green consciousness
La Pard
Inspired by stars and constellations, La Pard’s collection comprised of bikinis, one pieces, swim shorts and crop tops using accent colours of magenta, orange and brown. Her resort wear pieces were long flowy dresses in silk and chiffon which can be dressed up or down. Dinushi used her signature style of batik in her creations.
Meraki
Models stomped down the runway in a military inspired swimwear collection. Sharmilla Ruberu the designer behind Meraki, presented a collection in military colours of olive, brown and navy with accent colours of red plum. Her bikinis, bandeaus and one piece swimwear were both daring and edgy with a nuance of attitude.
Maus
Just like its designer Annika Fernando, this collection by Maus was sophisticated and stylish. A largely monochrome collection with pops of red made this collection exquisite. Marshalling the batik expertise of Sonali Dharmawardne, Annika created some intricate batik patterned maxi style dresses which lent a classic and timeless elegance to her collection. Funky sandals added to the sleek look. Her collection combined high end style with impeccable quality. Classic flattering lines and chic monochrome added to this brand’s sun soaked holiday in the tropics vibe!
Rachel Raj
A brand that offers luxury ready to wear, freesize clothing, Rachel Raj is designed and made in Sri Lanka. Using the crane flower as her inspiration, Sarita Rajendra, the designer behind the brand showcased a collection of swim and resort wear which was sassy, sexy and sophisticated. Her gold hued swimwear evoked memories of a bygone era. The whole collection had a retro feel to it with evolving memories of the 70’s classic disco era.
Koca
Siblings Rusla and Najila presented a collection of resort wear which was dominated by prints designed by themselves. Reds, greens, and oranges inspired by the Josean colour palette made this an interesting collection. Flowly silhouettes with obi belts, dramatic collars and billowing sleeves which lent itself to the Koca design aesthetic were sent down the runway in dramatic style.
Rum Punch
Keeping in line with their style ethos Rum Punch bought colour and energy onto the ramp with their swimwear collection. Featuring geometric prints in bright colours this collection certainly packed a punch! This exotic collection focused on swimwear and activewear along with beach accessories embodying the island spirit.
Arugambay
Capturing the essence of East Coast Sri Lanka, the collection by arugambay takes a pun on Aztec with its use of prints. With blue and green dominantly used throughout the collection, it plays tribute to surf philosophy and the marine environment.
Hot As Hell
Paradis Trouvé by HAH was inspired by Mother Earth. With a rich colour palette of blood red, green, brown and cream the collection stayed true to the brand’s roots in natural, ethical products for women. With stunning silhouettes, bikinis and one piece swimwear in hand drawn prints HAH presented a show stopping line up at Swim Week Colombo.
