Everything creative starts 'just like that'...for fun, for love, for sadness, for friendship or fear...or for no reason at all...just, 'ohè'- without a thought or an agenda..." - Nelun Harasgama, the creative force behind the label ohè island
Enter through the pretty pink ohè island door tucked away down Pedris Road in heart of residential Colombo 07 and embrace their ethos of the unstitched life, a life that takes you where it will, when it will. They invite you to “drop in for a drawn-out browse, or just to take in a little madness in-between your basic day”.
Everything is handmade at ohè in either pure silk or 100% cotton. All their glorious silken saris in bold colours are thought provoking interpretations of paintings by old masters or modern artists and are truly ‘wearable art pieces'.
Art appreciation is often thought of as erudite, but an interest in fashion is considered frivolous. When an art lover buys art, it's called "collecting." When a fashion enthusiast buys clothing, it's called "shopping." Art is supposed to be timeless and important, while fashion is understood to be ephemeral, even though fashion can tell you what people wore at a certain period just as pottery can tell you what their tea parties were like! Despite this list of differences between art and fashion, the two have cross-pollinated at ohè island beautifully with Joan Miro and Mondrian pieces featured exquisitely.
Flowing kurtas, maxis, tops and shawls all form part of the collection that can be found here with an emphasis of freedom of spirit. The label also features clutches and tote bags and homeware. Their cushion covers are guaranteed to add that touch of whimsy to any home.
The addition of the ohè island into Colombo’s shopping landscape is much welcomed as it offers a new perspective that is refreshingly free-spirited, bohemian and island chic.
