The Style Files: Classic Khaki Has Never Been Chicer
There have been so many celeb sightings in khaki and think maybe this is the new sartorial way forward; it's an easy wearable colour. You would be forgiven for thinking that khaki is the new “have to have it” colour, for the ubiquitous military shade is set to be de-riguer for the later part of the year. Khaki acts as a blank canvas that can be worn head-to-toe, with other shades of green, against strong bright pops of colour or more classically with neutral tones. I love this colour as it can also be worn to suit all styles. Whether your vibe is more safari chic, utility or street there is something for everyone.
Over the last few years AW collections have always had a heavy leaning towards the khaki hues embellished with little uniform elements and military flourishes. This captivating neutral works with most tones but is smartest when its worn with grey, navy or any hue from the desert colours. This shade of green looks great with all skin tones and doesn't wash you out as much as black does. It's as flattering as black can be in terms of its slimming qualities - especially if you go for a darker tone.
The tone does well for both structured silhouettes and slightly slouchier ones. It has an elegance that has captured designers attention and wears beautifully on most skin tones. Look to high street stores like Mango, Avirate, Cotton Collection and Kelly Felder which have some key khaki pieces and trawl the Zara section of House of Fashion for some clever buys. Be inspired by fashion icons like Kendall Jenner and Olivia Palermo on how to wear the hue.
Khaki may have been borrowed from the Army, but it is far from uniform as there is every shade, from deepest olive to sage green. Add a feminine touch to take the too military edge off, or incorporate flashes of the colour with vibrant hues. Think of khaki as the key element of your wardrobe, and start getting your kit together!
