5 Ways to Style Things up With a Sarong

Sarongs, although a traditional Lankan garment, are rarely worn these days (except by uncles with their cute pot bellies and during Avurudu when everyone is too lazy to get themselves a Reddai Hatte).

Sarongs, in my opinion, are quite stylish when styled well.

So, welcome to your first class in Sarongometry!

1) Wear the right tee / shirt / kurti

Batik sarongs and handloom sarongs are the most commonly available type in Lanka. To make your sarong #ootd stand out, you’ve got to know what type of tee/shirt/kurti to wear.

If it’s a batik sarong, opt for a plain tee / shirt / kurti.

If it’s a sarong with a print, opt for a plain tee / shirt / kurti again.

If your sarong is one of those handloom ones or is plain without prints, opt for a printed tee / shirt / kurti.

For dark colored sarongs, wear light colored tee / shirt / kurti and for light colored sarongs, wear dark colored tee/shirt/kurti.

The first step to rocking that sarong has definitely got to be wearing the right tee / shirt / kurti.

2) Wear your sarong as a dress

Yes, that’s right. Ditch the old ways and tie your sarong as a dress. This will only work with sarongs that are made of soft materials. So if you own a handloom sarong, this might be tough.

All you’ve got to do is tie the sarong like you usually do, but below your shoulders and not your waist. Quite simple, really!

3) Accessorize!

The key to making any outfit stand out is to accessorize the living hell out of it!

Embellish your look with chunky bangles, necklaces and nice earrings.

Work it like a Sri Lankan gypsy!

4) Wear your sarong as a short skirt

Ditch conventional, adopt new! This is not as easy as wrapping your sarong as a dress, but it’s not that difficult either.

Halve your sarong. Iron it so there’s a definite crease. Then, wrap it like you usually would. So, instead of an ankle length sarong, you will have a rather short, knee length sarong.

5) Ditch the sarong and grab your oldest and most favourite jeans!

I know trying to look stylish can be quite an effort. Coming from a person whose mom picks out her clothes, trying to look stylish is really tiring and some of us aren’t really blessed with the skills to pull off the fashionista look every single day. YOLOOOOOOOO.

So, just wear your old jeans and a super large tee shirt and you’re good to go because
